Have you ever heard of “GUIDE”, or more precisely, “Medicare GUIDE”? Sadly, the likelihood is that you have not heard of this program. And yet, what a fantastic program from Medicare for families with someone suffering from dementia. It is designed to support people living with dementia. It is designed to support people living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers. It stands for GUiding an Improved Dementia Experience.
In this blog, we want to let you know how great Medicare GUIDE is, help you quickly check eligibility, review the benefits of the program, answer questions you may have, and help your family take advantage of it if you can.

First, let’s review your eligibility.
The criteria are quite simple, but not everyone qualifies. Let’s go through 5 questions together.
Here are a few questions to answer
Question #1: Do you have a family member suffering from (moderate to severe) dementia?
While an official diagnosis will be needed from your doctor later in the process, you do not need to know how severe the dementia is. It will be diagnosed at a later time. If you answer yes, let’s move to question #2.
Question #2: Is your loved one enrolled in original Medicare, ie Medicare Part A and B?
If you do not know, check out the Medicare card…. See the example below.

If your answer is yes, then move to question #3.
Question #3: Have you taken care of this family member, like so many Americans do daily for their loved ones, with no compensation?
If yes, let’s move to question #4.
Question #4: Where do you currently live?
If your answer is at home, in an assisted living facility, you qualify. Move to question #5.
Question #5: Confirm that you are not currently on hospice?
If your answer is yes to all of these questions, then you likely qualify for 72 hours of respite care.

Second, let’s review your full set of benefits under Medicare GUIDE, as they go beyond the 72 hours of respite care.
Assisting Hands has partnered with PocketRN, a virtual nursing platform that connects patients and caregivers with specialized nurses via video calls to provide home-based care. This partnership provides you with a host of added benefits, from 24/7 virtual access to your care team, nurse check-ins, medication review, and management of other chronic conditions. For families, the 72 hours of respite care are particularly useful, but so is the care coordination, the family support, education, and 1-on-1 coaching and access to community resources.
When Caregiving Takes Over Your Life
Overwhelming Care Demands
Providing ongoing care places a heavy load on caregivers physically, emotionally, mentally, and financially. From assisting with daily personal needs and managing household responsibilities to coordinating medical appointments and handling expenses, caregivers often find themselves stretched across every aspect of a loved one’s life.
Chronic Stress and Emotional Strain
Many caregivers experience persistent stress, burnout, and feelings of isolation. Over time, this emotional toll can erode their own health, increasing the risk of exhaustion, illness, and the need for medical care themselves.
Limited Guidance and Fragmented Support
Caregivers are frequently left to navigate complex care systems on their own. Without consistent coordination, training, or easy access to community resources, they may struggle to manage the growing and changing needs of the person in their care.

FAQs
Do I pay anything to access 72 hours of respite care for my loved one?
No, provided your loved one qualifies, this program is entirely free to the family.
Are there limitations on how the hours must be used?
Yes. The hours must be used in 4-hour blocks. You have 18 4-hour blocks of time you can use however you please.
You can use them across the entire year (for example, 1 4-hour block every 3rd week), or over a short period of time (like 2 4-hour blocks weekly for 2 months). How you use your time is up to you and your needs.
What if I do not use the hours for the year?
The hours you have not used by the end of the year cannot be added to the hours of the following year. It is a “use it or lose it” system.
When does the year start and end?
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which administers this program, runs on a fiscal year basis, with a year-end of June 30th.
