Aging isn’t easy-especially for our Veterans who’ve already given so much. The aches, the fatigue, the daily challenges of simply getting dressed or making a meal – these can all add up. That’s where compassionate, professional home care for the elderly makes all the difference. If you or your loved one served in the military, veterans home care benefits may help cover the cost. Yes, even 100% in many cases.
At Assisting Hands Home Care Gulf Coast, we proudly serve those who served us. Our company is VA-approved and we are ready to help Veterans, spouses of Veteran, and surviving spouses stay comfortable, safe, and independent at home.
Tailored Home Care Solutions: Supporting Elderly and Veteran Needs
Can Veterans Really Get Free Home Care Services?
Yes – and many don’t even realize it! The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides in-home care to qualifying Veterans through the VA Community Care Network. As an approved provider, we help Veterans secure:
- Respite Care
- Home health aide assistance
- Personal care and grooming
- Assistance with meals, mobility, and bathing
If you qualify, the VA may cover these services in full, with no cost to you. That’s life-changing, especially for Veterans with chronic illness, disabilities, or aging-related needs.
What Is the VA Community Care and Home Health Aide Program?
This program allows eligible Veterans to receive supportive care right at home, from trained aides who assist with activities of daily living. Services include:
- Bathing and dressing
- Incontinence and toileting
- Cooking and eating
- Medication reminders
- Transferring and positioning
These aren’t nurses, but they are professionally trained nursing aides supervised by a licensed nurse to ensure quality and safety.
To qualify, a VA provider affiliated with the VA health system must refer the Veteran into the program. A VA Social Worker will review the referral and approve the number of allowable weekly hours to receive personal or respite care. The VA Social Worker will send an authorization to the Home Care Agency. Every Veteran has a choice. You may inform the VA Social Worker that you have selected Assisting Hands to be your home care agency.; We are here to guide you through every step of the process and make it seamless.
Who Is Eligible for VA Home Health Aide Benefits?
To qualify for VA Home Health Aide benefits, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in VA healthcare or be under the care of a VA provider
- Have a medical need that requires assistance with personal care
Additionally, to receive Respite Care hours, you must have a family caregiver who would benefit from temporary relief provided by a professional caregiver from us.
How Can Veterans, Spouses, or Surviving Spouses of Veterans Apply for the VA Home Care (Aid & Attendance) Pension?
Wartime Veterans and their spouses, as well as surviving spouses may also qualify for the VA Aid & Attendance Pension, which can significantly increase the amount of care hours covered.
That’s where Assisting Hands Home Care of the Gulf Coast comes in. We make the process simple:
- We’ll verify eligibility and enrollment
- Help you complete necessary forms (like the 1010EZ)
- Assist in gathering military service documentation (e.g., DD-214)
- Coordinate your VA clinic appointment
- Facilitate referrals from your VA provider for home care
We do all the heavy lifting so you or your loved one can age with dignity, in the comfort of home.
How to Request More In-Home Care Hours Through the VA?
Need more hours than you’re currently receiving? Veterans may request an increase in hours by:
- Speaking with their VA primary care doctor
- Documenting increased care needs or family caregiver burden
- Working with a VA-approved agency (like us!) to submit justification
If you’ve had changes in mobility, increased falls, or caregiver exhaustion, we can help you get the care time you need.
Can Veterans Get Additional Help Through the Community Care Network or VA Home Health Aide (HHA)?
Yes. The Community Care Network (CCN) or VA HHA is how the VA partners with local agencies like ours. This expands your options beyond VA hospitals or clinics.
If in-home care is prescribed, the CCN or VA HHA allows you to choose us – Assisting Hands Gulf Coast – to deliver those services, often faster and closer to home.
Using VA Aid & Attendance to Support More Home Care Hours
Aid & Attendance is a monthly financial benefit added to your VA pension that can be used to pay for in-home care services. You may qualify if:
- Need help with daily living tasks (at least two)
- Have assets less than approximately $159,000 (subject to change)
We specialize in helping Veterans, couple, and surviving spouses apply for and maximize this benefit – which can cover thousands in care each month.
Does Medicare Cover In-Home Care?
Medicare does not typically pay for long-term home care services such as bathing unless it’s part of a skilled nursing plan. However, the VA HHA programs are not income-based and can provide full or partial coverage for non-medical care services – depending on eligibility.
If you’re not sure where to start, we’ll evaluate all your options and help you understand how VA and Medicare can work together to cover your care needs.
How Do Surviving Spouses of Veterans Qualify for Help Paying for Home Care?
Surviving spouses of Veterans may qualify for VA Aid & Attendance if:
- The Veteran served during wartime
- You were married at the time of their passing
- You meet financial and care need criteria
We help you navigate the application process, so you don’t have to face confusing paperwork alone.
