Veterans Day is an official United States federal holiday that is observed annually on November 11, honoring people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day that is observed every year on the last Monday of May; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day is a federal holiday of remembering the men and women who gave their lives while in service.
Veterans have served their country with devotion, and when the need for caregiving arises, the veteran may require assistance in feeding, dressing, and mobility, or simply companionship care for conversation and empathy. Many veterans are in need of a Homemaker or Home Health Aide (HHA); others in need of skilled nursing and therapy. An aide may be able to come to a veteran’s house several times a week or just once in a while a licensed practitioner nurse (LPN) or registered nurse (RN) may coordinate their efforts with the veteran’s physician and assist them with medication administration, post-surgical care, wound management, chronic disease management, and more.
Veterans and surviving spouses may need extra help with their daily activities, which include, but not limited to:
When the time comes for veterans and surviving spouses to receive these types of services, they have the right to reside where they choose, and this is available with help from agencies such as Assisting Hands – Serving Boca Delray.
Living in the home where familiarity aids them psychologically is not impossible. All it requires is a caregiver’s sympathetic ear and helping hand to ease the parts of life that have proven a challenge. For veterans whose circumstances require them to remain in bed, the caregiving aspect is paramount, with added concerns. Transportation to appointments both medical and otherwise becomes more than an inconvenience. Family and friends will do all they are able, but distance and prior commitments limit their time and availability. That’s when Assisting Hands can help.
Many veterans and their spouses are unaware of a benefit they are entitled to that could help them pay for care as they age. Read “In-Home Care for Veterans and Surviving Spouses” to learn more about these benefits.
