Medication Management – Home Care can Help!

Did you know that many seniors who move to a nursing home or Assisted Living Facility do so because they have problems managing their medications?  Vision problems, memory loss, and arthritis might make it hard to read pill bottle labels, remember to take a dose, and even to open the container.

This should not be the sole reason for a senior moving into a nursing home or Assisted Living.

Medication management services alone, or in conjunction with home care services may provide an alternative plan, allowing seniors to stay home longer. Skilled nursing services, (registered or practical nurses), can be provided for seniors in their own home to help with administering and managing medications.

Medication management can be customized to meet the specific needs of each senior, ranging from simple pillbox preparation and delivery to full-service management. With either plan, the goal is to ensure that medications are taken safely.

Nonmedical home care also can help, at a lower cost. As part of a suite of services that might include assistance with bathing, dressing, meal preparation, and light housekeeping, the caregiver can also provide medication reminders, and drive the client to the pharmacy or pick up prescriptions.

Although non-medical caregivers can NOT administer medications, they are often the first one to notice if a senior client is suffering from side effects such as dizziness, depression, or sleep disturbances. Some side effects even mimic the symptoms of dementia!

Having a trained caregiver and or medication manager on the scene protects the health and well-being of seniors. Often times, families live far away from their loved one. These services can provide invaluable peace of mind for the family.
