What Can You Do to Help Your Senior Cope with Moving?

March 21, 2018Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Elderly Care in Pinellas Park FL, Moving and Your Senior

Moving to a new home or to your home can solve a lot of problems for your aging adult, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy.

Be Patient with the Process

No matter where your senior is moving to, this is a process that can take some time for her to feel fully comfortable doing. If she’s moving in with you, she may feel as if she’s losing some of her independence, even if this is truly in her best interests. Your senior may need to talk about how she’s feeling and what her life will be like after the move. Working with a counselor can help her to get to the bottom of some of those feelings.

Determine What She Needs from You

There may be quite a bit of practical help you can provide for your aging adult when it comes to her impending move. You might be in charge of all of the key portions of the move, from arranging for a new location to lining up movers and other essential services. Your senior may also benefit from having elderly care providers helping her while you focus on the move when it’s actually time to move.

Set up a Plan for Packing

Moving requires quite a bit of attention well before the actual event. If your aging family member has lived in her home for a while, there might be a lot for her to pack. Set up a plan so that you can both handle the bulk of the packing before the day of the move. Many moving companies also offer packing services, which could come in handy during this time.

Get Extra Help if You Need It

The stress of moving can be a lot for your elderly family member to deal with, but it can also be a lot for you to manage. Look for ways to get extra help with all aspects of your life, if necessary. Delegating other tasks and responsibilities for a day or so can help you to keep meeting your own obligations.

Even when it’s something that is positive for your aging adult, moving is complicated and can be painful for everyone involved. Take your time and encourage your senior to talk to you about how she’s feeling.
