Helping Keep a Senior with Memory Loss Safe

October 6, 2021Becky MoultrieAlzheimer's and Dementia, Blog Posts, Side Effects

Does your elderly loved one have some memory loss? Does it seem as if they are constantly forgetting where they put things or where they need to go? Does your elderly loved one think they live in a different house and keep trying to go there? These are just some things that elderly people with memory loss often experience.

Is this is the case for your elderly loved one? If so, there are some ways that you and senior home care providers can help to keep your elderly loved one safe.

Talking to Your Loved One

If your elderly loved one has memory loss, talk to them about it. Make sure you ask your elderly loved one what type of help they need. Would they like you to provide care for them? Do they want a senior care provider to come to their house once every other day to help them remember things? Hopefully, by talking to your elderly loved one, you can make a plan to keep them safer, despite their memory loss. If their memory loss is too severe to have this type of conversation, you can work with senior home care providers to create a care plan for them.

Slowing Down

Is your elderly loved one forgetting things? If so, it is important to understand that their brain isn’t working as well as it used to be. They may need you to slow down when you are talking. You should also be sure not to give your elderly loved one too much information at once. By doing these two things, hopefully, your elderly loved one will be able to process and remember the information you are giving to them.

For example, if you don’t want your elderly loved one to use the stove when you or a senior home care provider isn’t there, give them one or two sentence instructions not to do this.

Engaging During the Conversation

If your elderly loved one is experiencing memory loss, it might help to get them engaged during the conversations. Sometimes, doing physical activity while trying to remember something can help a person to better retain the information.

For example, you may want your elderly loved one to remember to use their shower chair whenever they take a bath or shower. To help them remember, you or a senior home care provider can go in the bathroom with your elderly loved one. Then, have them put the shower chair in the bathtub or shower. Have them sit down on it. Hopefully, having them do this can help them to remember they shouldn’t be taking a shower or bath without that chair.

Conclusion

Are you worried that your elderly loved one won’t stay safe now that they have some memory loss? If your elderly loved one’s memory loss isn’t that bad, you may be able to help them stay safe with the tips noted above.
