Caregivers in St. Pete Beach FL
Too many family caregivers don’t take care of themselves nearly as well as they care for their elderly loved ones. If that describes you, try some of these suggestions.
Make and Keep Doctor’s Appointments
You’ve had no problem taking your elderly loved one to every one of her own doctor’s appointments, but have you made it to your own? It’s not uncommon at all for family caregivers to neglect making and keeping appointments with their own doctors. If that’s true for you, resolve to change that as soon as possible.
Start a Regular Exercise Plan for Yourself
By setting up a regular exercise plan for yourself, you’re going to find that your energy levels improve, you’re going to be able to sleep better, and your body will be less prone to aches and pains. If you haven’t exercise d in a while, make sure that you talk to your doctor at your appointment about the best way to get back into exercise, assuming that you’re healthy enough to exercise.
Eat Foods that Will Nourish You
Eating processed foods or junk foods doesn’t give you the nutrients and the energy that you need to be a powerful family caregiver. Start paying attention to what you’re feeding yourself and how you feel after you eat. Even making a few small changes at a time can make a big difference. Aim to add more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet while phasing out sugar and processed foods.
Get Enough Sleep
If you’re not getting enough sleep, it’s going to be difficult to manage everything that you deal with throughout the day. Make it a point to get to bed at an early enough hour that you get plenty of sleep each night. Talk to your doctor if you’re having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, since those can be signs that you’re dealing with other issues, too.
Consider Taking Leave Away from Work, if You Can
Few family caregivers are able to devote every waking minute to their elderly loved one’s care. But you may be able to take a temporary leave from work when your loved one needs more attention from you. Determine what your options are so that when you need that time, you know what to do.
The healthier that you are as a family caregiver, the better you’ll be able to care for all of the people in your life that you love.
