5 Simple Changes to a Healthier Heart

Can you improve your heart health with 5 simple changes? There are many factors that contribute to your heart health (good or bad): Genetics, diet, exercise, and stress are some of the key components. It is important to be cognizant of these issues early in life to be sure that you have them under control as you get older. It is in your 20’s and 30’s that you should be planting the seeds for a healthy lifestyle.

Whether you are 25 or 65, here are 5 tips to a healthier heart:

  • Move. It is important to get your heart rate up at least 2 – 3 times per week. That doesn’t mean you need to run a marathon. Whether you run, walk, bike, step or something else, do something you enjoy. If you enjoy it, you will want to do it more and it won’t seem like exercise.
  • fruits-386758_1280Moderation. There are many ‘diets’ out there that will tell you to eat less carbs or less fat or less meat or less dairy. Consider this – read the ingredients in any packaged food. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. Try to eat whole foods when you can. Does that mean you have to give up a few chips and dip now and then? Moderation is the key!
  • Cut the sugar. While we are talking about food, remember to reduce the amount of sugar you consume. It appears in a lot more foods than you think and goes by a lot of different names – corn syrup, dextrose, molasses, fructose, glucose, and more. Too much sugar can cause weight gain, high blood pressure and more issues that put you at a greater risk of heart disease.
  • Sleep. There is something to be said for a good night’s sleep; you wake up refreshed in the morning, ready for a new day. That may mean turning off the electronic devices before going meditation-1063449_640to bed, and reducing the alcohol and caffeine you have in the evening. Try to get 7 – 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Stress less. Life can be stressful: Work is a hassle, the kids are sick, the car needs a repair. Take time to de-stress and look at the positive side of things. Meditation, relaxation – even a massage – can help you focus on the good things.

The answer to the question is yes, but…  You need to be aware of many factors when it comes to heart health. It is always best to consult your physician so he or she can review your whole picture. But these 5 tips will certainly help you have a healthier heart!
