Winter is here, but that doesn’t mean you should lock yourself up. In fact, during the winter you should take even more time to prioritize health and wellness. Indeed, there are many light indoor and outdoor activities that seniors can enjoy, and here are just a couple of exercises for seniors:
Walking
Not everyone needs two hours of vigorous exercises to keep fit, and for seniors, sometimes small exercises can help them stay active and mobile. But the main thing to keep in mind is that sitting all day is not advisable–for anyone.
Walking has many health benefits, including cardiovascular improvements, strong bones, joints and muscles, better sleeping habits, strong immune system, and majorly improved mood by increasing blood flow and circulation to the brain and boosting the endorphin levels. It is a healthy and refreshing form of exercise for people of all ages.
In addition, walking helps in reducing the rate of depression among people, especially seniors. This simple exercise entails taking a trip around the block, but can also including walking around the house, such as making bedroom rounds while picking up one or two things to set in order and minor chores.
Even more so, this can be more effective in a house full of kids; letting them drag along their grandparents a few times a day could be very effective (never mind the emotional boost from the laughter and chatter).
Family Bonding Activities
All family members can participate in these kinds of activities, which are fun bonding exercises such as light dancing, outdoor cooking, and other family fun. One example could be hosting a family get-together where the older folks makes their most delicious meals while being helped by family; or perhaps a campfire with roasted marshmallows and music, with children roping their grandparents into a few modern dances to show them how time has passed. This is one of those good moments where old stories are told, the younger generation and the older generation learn something new from the other.
You can also take a lazy stroll around the property while playing simple games like catch with the dog, building snowmen, or raking leaves. The main thing is to keep it active but take breaks when needed.
As people age they can get tired pretty quickly, so keep things reasonable and fun for everyone. Just because the weather is a little chill doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy the wonders of mother nature.
