How To Have a Safe and Healthy 4th of July

June 21, 2022Community, Holidays, Home Safety and Senior Care BlogAssisting Hands Home Care

The 4th of July is a time for celebration! But it’s important to remember that with all the fun and festivities comes a certain level of risk–especially with being outside in the Central Texas summertime heat for an extended period of time. That’s why we here at Assisting Hands Home Care in West Austin have put together this brief but handy little guide on how to have a safe and healthy 4th of July.

Whether you’re planning on attending a fireworks show or hosting your own BBQ, follow these tips and you’ll be able to enjoy the holiday without any worries!

Remember your firework safety

Fireworks are a staple of any Fourth of July celebration, but they can also be dangerous. If you’re attending a public fireworks display, make sure to stay at least 500 feet away from the action.

And if you’re setting off your own fireworks, be sure to follow all safety instructions.

Expand your menu

When it comes to food, there are plenty of options that are both healthy and delicious! Grilled chicken or fish, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole-grain salads are all great choices for a Fourth of July BBQ.

This doesn’t mean you have to skimp on flavor, though. There are plenty of ways to make healthy food taste great with the right seasonings and sauces. It also doesn’t mean you can’t have any burgers or hotdogs. A little bit of everything in moderation is perfectly fine.

Stay cool and hydrated

It’s important to stay cool and hydrated when spending time outdoors in the summer heat–especially here in Austin.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, and take breaks indoors or in the shade if you start to feel overheated. Iced tea, lemonade, or fruit-infused water are all great choices for a Fourth of July celebration.

If you’re going to be outside for an extended period of time, make sure to take breaks in the shade or air conditioning. A wide-brimmed hat can also help keep you cool and protected from the sun’s harmful rays.

Remember the sunscreen

Don’t forget the sunscreen! Make sure to apply sunscreen, even if you’re not spending time in the direct sun. Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen before heading outdoors, and reapply every two hours or as needed.

Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing can also help keep you cool and protected from harmful UV rays. Sunburn is more than just a pain–it can also lead to serious health problems down the road, so it’s important to take precautions.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

With a little planning, you can have a safe and healthy Fourth of July celebration. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and choose healthy food options for your BBQ or picnic.

Fireworks are always a fun way to end the night, but be sure to stay safe by following all safety precautions. So from all of us Assisting Hands Home Care in West Austin, have a happy Fourth of July and enjoy the holiday with family and friends!
