March is popularly known as the National Social Work Month in the United States. It is a month aimed at recognizing the dedication and empathy of social workers across the country.
Why We Love Social Workers
Social workers are counselors, advocates, facilitators, and advisors working in schools, clinics, government offices, and businesses. These are people who have dedicated their lives to the service of others. Some of them perform their duties voluntarily. Their roles involve supporting people from all backgrounds in different communities and working environments.
Social workers offer most of their services during crisis situations or when there are a lot of barriers and uncertainty in life. They are the people who offer guidance and help us out of the most difficult situations. Social workers also advocate for equal rights for the underprivileged in our society.
Social workers are always in demand because they take on many roles. They work with both children and adults are highly trained in their respective areas. Most of them have at least a bachelor of social work degree or even higher.
Celebrating Social Workers in March
So how is the Social Worker Month observed?
The month-long observance gives everyone a chance to understand the concept of social work as well as learn about social work careers. Below are some of the things you can do during the month:
• Express support to any social worker you know
• Learn about the roles played by social workers
• Consider a career in social work
• Take part in a job fair
• Share with your friends the importance of being a social worker.
There are different other ways one can observe the social worker month. The main objective of the social worker month is to celebrate social workers and to raise awareness about social work in society. It is a fact that most people do not fully understand what social work is and how they can become part of it.
History of Social Work Month
The National Social Work month was first organized by the National Association of Social Workers in 1963. It was a way of encouraging the public to support the profession and get involved in different capacities.
Later in 1984, Congress passed a joint resolution that was proclaimed by the then President Ronald Reagan on March 22 as National Professional Social Work Month under proclamation 5167.
In a nutshell, the National Social Work Month is held every year in the month of March to recognize and celebrate social workers across the country. It is an event aimed at creating awareness about the role played by social workers and encourage the public to support the profession.
