How to Treat Shortness of Breath in the Elderly

August 21, 2023Assisting Hands

Several conditions can make it difficult for the lungs to receive oxygen. Unexplained and sudden labored breathing can be frightening for an aging person. When shortness of breath affects the elderly, it’s important for caregivers to address the issue and implement effective remedies.

What is shortness of breath?

Dyspnea is the clinical term for shortness of breath. Out of the blue, seniors may begin to take quick, gasping breaths. The labored breathing is the result of difficulty inhaling. When the lungs fail to get sufficient oxygen, the body responds by forcing the senior to take deeper breaths.

Unexpectedly feeling winded is a scary event for older adults. Along with their chest tightening, seniors with shortness of breath think they are suffocating. Panic attacks ensue and the shortness of breath worsens. Shortness of breath is difficult to predict, which intensifies the fear of it.

What causes shortness of breath in the elderly?

Dyspnea the elderly

Shortness of breath can be due to various causes. In healthy seniors, the condition may be triggered by intense physical activity. When shortness of breath occurs while exercising, it is usually not serious and passes after a few minutes of rest.

Traveling to high altitudes can also cause shortness of breath in seniors who have been diagnosed with breathing conditions. Similarly, visiting regions with cold or dry climates can bring on a bout of dyspnea. Warm climates that are dry as well as cold ones make it difficult to take in oxygen.

Certain health conditions are also known causes of shortness of breath. Asthma symptoms, which include shortness of breath, can worsen when allergens are abundant. Infections that affect the lungs, like pneumonia, can result in several symptoms, including shortness of breath.

Heart failure has many symptoms, one of which is shortness of breath. If the heart beats irregularly, which is known as an arrythmia, it can affect breathing. A rapid heartbeat can cause shortness of breath, potentially leading to a panic attack and subsequent labored breathing.

Several other medical conditions can also be responsible for causing shortness of breath. These include interstitial lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and hiatal hernia. Carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to a range of health symptoms, including shortness of breath.

What are home remedies for shortness of breath and wheezing in seniors?

Several home remedies are accessible to older adults who experience shortness of breath. Pursing the lips helps slow the pace of breathing, allowing each breath to be deeper and more effective. Pursed breathing releases trapped air from the lungs and can be used at any time.

Sitting forward relaxes the body and makes breathing easier by creating more space in the chest cavity for the lungs. Seniors can also try sitting forward and resting their forearms and head on a pillow placed on a table. Standing similarly relaxes the body and opens airways.

What foods help shortness of breath?

Drinking coffee is recommended when seniors feel winded. Caffeine reduces tightness in the muscles in the airways. It is thought to make it easier for older adults to take in air by slightly improving the way the airway functions. However, avoid drinking too much coffee, as it increases heart rate.

Shortness of breath that is caused by a respiratory infection may be reduced by consuming fresh ginger. Eat the ginger as part of a meal or add it to hot water as a beverage. Ginger fights the respiratory syncytial virus, which is a common cause of respiratory infections.

What is first aid for difficulty in breathing?

When seniors experience difficulty breathing, caregivers should give first aid. Call 911 or a local emergency number if the senior has chest pain, feels like an object is stuck in their throat, or does not feel there’s improvement in breathing after it starts.

Check the senior’s airway, breathing and pulse; if necessary, begin CPR. Loosen the older adults clothing, especially pieces that are tight. Help the elderly individual take any medications or use medical devices, such as an asthma inhaler or home oxygen.

Doctors often provide oxygen in a hospital setting, but it can be used at home if the physician advises it. When using home oxygen, always follow the instructions. Make an appointment with a doctor to find ways to determine the underlying cause and prescribe treatment to relieve breathlessness.

Shortness of breath often manifests differently among aging people. It is critical to seek medical attention when it is accompanied by swollen feet and ankles, wheezing, fever with chills, and cough or difficulty breathing while lying flat. If the condition worsens, see a doctor.

Older adults who experience shortness of breath can receive reliable transportation to the doctor’s office from the professional caregivers at Assisting Hands Home Care. We provide a wide range of additional non-medical elder care services to keep seniors healthy, safe, and comfortable.

Our reputable senior home care agency is staffed by compassionate caregivers who fulfill the daily care needs of older adults. Typical care responsibilities include meal preparation and grocery shopping. We can prepare foods and beverages with ginger to ease shortness of breath, for instance.

We perform light housekeeping to clean the home of allergens, which can trigger shortness of breath in some people. Our personal care assistance is appreciated by seniors who need help with toileting, bathing, grooming, and dressing. We also provide timely medication reminders.
