During the month of May each year, we celebrate Nurses Week, allowing us to recognize nurses’ selfless contributions and positive impact. Polls show that nursing has been the most trusted profession for nearly 20 consecutive years – a well-deserved honor.
Some of the most monumental moments in our lives are spent with a nurse – from the day we were born to when we pass away, and through many ups and downs during the journey.
Don’t feel alone if you would like to show your appreciation and honor the nurses you know but aren’t quite sure how to do that.
To assist you, here are five ideas you can use to show your appreciation.
Say “thank you”
This is easy to do, but it’s often overlooked. Nurses understand you’re not feeling your best when they’re caring for you or a loved one, but a well-timed and sincere expression of your appreciation can make their day.
Drop off a healthy snack
If you go into a nurse’s breakroom, you’ll likely see the same assortment of treats you’d find in many offices – cookies, cupcakes, and pizza, which well-meaning patients’ families and physicians often deliver. Consider giving them a snack that’s on the healthier side, like protein bars, fruit, or trail mix. Not only will they feel appreciated, but they’ll have more energy for their long shift.
Share your appreciation and praise with your manager
Everyone loves a compliment from their boss. When you share your gratitude with your nurse’s manager, you give that manager the chance to recognize your nurse’s excellent performance and tell them that their work is appreciated.
Give them a handwritten note or card
The fact that you took the time to pen your thoughts and express your appreciation deeply touches them. Your card or message becomes a valuable keepsake to them, one they often read again throughout the years. Cards and notes let nurses know how deeply you value what they do.
Give them a small gift
Everyone loves a gift, no matter how big or small it is. One thoughtful gift for a nurse is a pair of compression socks. Nurses are on their feet for long periods during their shift, and a good pair of compression socks can ease aches and pains and prevent swelling. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
These are five great ways you can thank a nurse for all they do. If you can’t give a gift, take a moment to thank them. If a nurse has positively impacted you, show them some appreciation this year during Nurses Week. It will make you both feel good.
