Unmasking the Shadows: Understanding Alzheimer’s

At Assisting Hands® Home Care, we’ve always considered it a privilege to support families navigating the often-complex journey of home-based care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. June marks Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, and as part of our unwavering commitment to families affected by this condition, we’re taking this opportunity to enhance awareness and understanding of this disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease: A Glimpse into the Silent Epidemic

Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking skills, and the ability to perform even the simplest tasks. It’s the most common cause of dementia among older adults, and an estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2021, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

However, the reach of Alzheimer’s extends beyond those directly affected by the disease. The strain on caregivers – emotionally, physically, and financially – is a silent epidemic in itself. But it’s through understanding and awareness, we can collectively shine a light on this shadowy disease and transform the care environment for the better.

Assisting Hands® Home Care: A Pillar of Support

In the face of the challenges posed by Alzheimer’s, Assisting Hands has been a steadfast pillar of support for families. We understand that care requirements for individuals living with Alzheimer’s are unique, evolving, and demand a deep level of empathy. We tailor our services to meet these requirements, promoting comfort, safety, and dignity for each individual in our care.

Awareness Leads to Understanding

Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is a call to action, urging us all to learn more about the disease. Greater understanding can lead to earlier diagnosis, which is instrumental in managing the disease. The earlier the detection, the better the chances of benefiting from treatment, planning for the future, and living a quality life.

Shaping the Future through Research and Advocacy

In addition to promoting awareness, this month is an opportunity to support ongoing research and advocacy. Significant strides have been made in understanding Alzheimer’s Disease, yet much remains to be discovered. Funding for research is crucial to help unveil the intricacies of the disease and pave the way for effective treatments and, hopefully, a cure.

How You Can Help

This Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we invite you to join Assisting Hands in our endeavor to enhance understanding, promote early diagnosis, and support research:

Learn: Familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s not just about forgetfulness; it includes difficulties in planning, problem-solving, and performing familiar tasks, among others.

Communicate: Talk about it. Break the stigma associated with Alzheimer’s by having open discussions with friends, family, and colleagues.

Support: Donate to organizations that fund Alzheimer’s research. Your contribution can make a tangible difference in advancing the progress toward a cure.

Volunteer: Offer your time and skills to local Alzheimer’s organizations. This can range from providing respite for caregivers to helping organize awareness events to advocating for policy change.

Our collective action is our greatest weapon in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. As we take steps forward in knowledge, understanding, and compassion, we get closer to a world where Alzheimer’s is but a memory.

At Assisting Hands, we are proud to stand with all those touched by Alzheimer’s. This month and every day after, we are committed to illuminating the path toward a more hopeful, informed future.
