7 Habits Of The Best Houston Home Caregivers Pt 2

4. Time Management

Time management, as mentioned earlier, is essential in caregiving. This is because the caregiver is required to take care of clients with various illnesses and conditions. He/she has to ensure the client (seniors and people with disabilities) take their medication on time to facilitate faster recovery. Some clients can also be more sensitive to routine changes, hence they will want an assurance that the caregiver is reliable and trustworthy.

more to time management in caregiving than merely showing up to work on time. A caregiver needs to prioritize goals, as well as understand the amount of time required for each task. He/she needs to ensure his/her pace suits the clients based on their unique needs. Some clients may prefer to eat slowly, while others will rush through their meals. It’s therefore imperative for the caregiver to ensure he/she allots enough time for such. Each client has unique needs and demands, all of which the caregiver has to anticipate and plan for well.

5. Have Empathy

Compassion is one of the essential requirements/traits in caregiving. Although some tasks may be repetitive and become dull over time, a good caregiver will strive to do them for as long as they make the client happy. Caregiving also entails putting yourself in the other person’s (client’s) shoes and figuring out what they wish to have, then give it to them. While some caregivers may struggle with this, many will find a way to make it work, and even better, start enjoying it.

Empathy, in caregiving, means doing what others wish to be cared for, in their own way. Every client has a unique set of dislikes and preferences, most of which you need to understand and handle with care. The deep sense of compassion and willingness to help is what makes some caregivers more efficient and better than others.

6. Training

Caregiving is a continually evolving career, which means one needs to commit to ongoing training and education for the same. The willingness to continue learning makes it easy for the caregiver to handle various clients professionally. Home care training includes:

  • Meal preparation
  • Proper use of medical equipment at home
  • Proper handling, lifting, and transfer techniques
  • Medication administration
  • First Aid And CPR
  • Trauma prevention
  • Emergency protocols
  • Etc.

A good caregiver will strive to stay on top of medical advancements and techniques in this field. This is what makes a caregiver efficient in what they do.

7. Self-Care

Much of a caregiver’s life revolves around clients and patients looking up to them. This alone makes it easy for one to forget about his/her personal life and hygiene, leading to emotional, physical, and mental burnout. The only way a caregiver will be able to do his/her job diligently is if he/she is in perfect physical and mental health.

Self-care is essential for all caregivers. This not only involves eating a well-balanced and healthy meal but also getting plenty of sleep. Having a good night’s sleep rejuvenates body cells, thus making it easier to take on the next day’s tasks with ease. Like everybody else, regular exercise provides a great way to stay fit as well as get the blood moving. Most world-class caregivers take on physical exercises, breathing exercises, and meditation every day as a way to combat stress and fatigue.
