Top 5 Creative Ways To Connect With Elderly Persons

Connecting with the elderly and spending some time together can be enriching and fulfilling. However, most people find connecting with the elderly somewhat challenging, hence aborting the mission altogether. Connecting with the elderly doesn’t have to be as challenging as many presume; you only need to be creative and find common ground to start talking. Here are some of the best ways to connect with elderly persons in your life.

1. Through Music & Art

Nothing brings different generations together than music and art. It provides a powerful force in which persons with a huge age gap can come together to share experiences in what they love. Sculpting and painting, for example, make for excellent ways to connect with seniors in your life. Painting is also known to help seniors suffering from memory loss and dementia by boosting their cognitive function.

2. Preparing, Cooking & Sharing A Meal

Sharing a meal is one of the few things in life that bring joy and people together. Food is a cornerstone in almost every culture, generation, and belief system. While having the meal provides the body with essential nutrients for sustenance, it also is the perfect time to converse, bond, and share memories with your loved ones. The connection can be even greater when/if you prepare and cook the food together.

3. Play Games Together

What kind of games did your mom or dad enjoy playing, especially during childhood. Most dads enjoyed card shark and chess while moms were a maven at the backgammon table. Identify the games they used to love, then try to play such with them. Although you might not notice, playing these games with your aging loved ones enables them to relive their past, putting a smile on their faces.

4. Explore Nature

Taking a relaxing walk in the park or going for a picnic is one of the best ways to connect with seniors. Just remember to bring some delicious packed lunch to enjoy after the walk or as you watch the sunset. If going out is out of the question, you can help tend to their garden, yard, or even houseplants.

5. Telling Stories

The elderly love telling stories; especially about their past experiences, how life was, and other memories. All you need to do is create time to visit them and be in no hurry to leave. Wait until everyone is comfortable and ask a question you have always wanted to ask them. Most older adults will gladly answer it and even tell you stories of their youth.

6. Learn A New Skill

According to research, you are more likely to realize your goals or learn a new skill more efficiently if you do it with a partner or friend. Find out what other skills your dad or mom might want to learn, then try doing it together. Both of you can motivate each other to achieve the dream, creating more happy memories in the process.

7. Be Active In Social Situations

It is crucial for seniors to participate in community activities, see other people, and go out and see the world. Most seniors will start opening up in social settings compared to when confined in a room. That said, identify community centers you can go to and participate in whatever activities there are together.
