Why Seniors Feel Secure At Home In Houston

5 Reasons Why Seniors Want To Stay In Their Homes

The majority of seniors prefer to stay in their homes as they age. Most of them are afraid of leaving behind their family, neighbors, and memories of their homes. On the other hand, moving involves a lot of physical and emotional stress for older adults. When you add the fear of the unknown to these concerns, moving your parent or grandparent to a senior living facility can be almost impossible. But the truth is that living at home by themselves can be unhealthy and dangerous for many seniors. This article provides information on why a senior prefers to stay in his/her own home, and how moving your parent or grandparent to a senior living facility can improve his/her quality of life – even when the senior is reluctant to move at first.

Over 90% of senior adults plan to stay in their current homes for the next 5-10 years. More than 85% of such seniors believe that they could stay in their homes without any modifications to their current homes. But many of the survey respondents accepted that they felt increasingly difficult to live independently as they grew older. Only 43% of older adults aged 70 and above accepted that they could live independently even as they grew older. Despite the challenges that come with living alone, many older adults still want to live in their own homes. Every senior adult had different reasons to stay in their own home. Here are 5 reasons why seniors want to stay in their own homes.

1. The Physical Stress Of Moving

Many seniors think that moving out of a family home means they have to sort through decades of possessions and keepsakes. It involves a lot of physical and emotional stress for them even if their families hire a moving service to facilitate the move. In fact, the family will have to go through these items and arrange for a storage option or an estate sale.

2. The Fear Of Losing Independence

Many seniors believe that moving to a senior facility means a loss of independence. But today’s senior facilities offer much more than just physical care. They encourage to empower their residents in many ways. But it is extremely hard to change the existing perception.

3. Anxiety Over Leaving A Community

Moving to a senior facility means changing their decades-old habits and routines. Most seniors worry that such a move will isolate them from friendships that have lasted for decades.

4. Emotional Ties To The Family Home

A home is something to be cherished. Seniors have associated decades of fond memories with their current homes and find it difficult to break these ties.

5. The Fear Of The Unknown

The fear of the unknown keeps the seniors from choosing a new environment in the last stages of their lives. The senior doesn’t know if the move is worth all the emotional and physical stress. They fear being left out of future family functions.
