9 Healthy Living Tips For Seniors

Part 1

It is everyone’s wish to live a happy and healthy life. Although this might seem impossible for many, taking proper care of your body (through exercise, managing stress, and a good diet) is all it takes to stay healthy. This is particularly crucial for seniors whose immunity system isn’t as strong as in their youth. A simple common cold or flu can progress to something more sinister, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, sinus, and ear infection. The condition can be even worse for individuals with an underlying chronic disease, such as respiratory illnesses, diabetes, or asthma.

The best way to avoid most of these conditions is to make healthy choices and live an active lifestyle. Even the most straightforward steps, such as having a well-balanced and nutritious meal every day, can go a long way in strengthening your immunity regardless of your age. Here are 9 tips and tricks to staying healthy all year round.

1. Stay Active

Doctors advise us to get at least 30 minutes worth of physical exercise every day, and with a good reason. Physical activity improves the body’s response to infections and inflammation, the body’s first line of defense against diseases. There is more to physical activity than just going to the gym. Simple exercises such as swimming, walking, biking, and low-impact aerobics are enough to get your body and health in check. If possible, engage in moderate activity for at least 20 minutes every day, or 150 minutes in a week, to see a difference. Exercising also helps tone your muscles and keep weight in check too. It would also be advisable to take on exercises you are most comfortable with (depending on your physical condition).

2. Take Supplements

Supplements help boost your intake of vital nutrients and vitamins, especially those that your body cannot manufacture, hence good for a healthier immune system. Talk to your doctor first before taking some of these supplements, especially if on prescription drugs. Some of the supplements you should consider taking include vitamin B6, vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D. Multivitamins or supplements come in handy in promoting good health and a robust immune system.

3. Have A Healthy Diet Plan

You can never go wrong with a healthy diet plan. The best diet plan should include everything from fresh veggies, fruits, lean meats, high-quality carbs, and fiber. These provide the body with the essential nutrients needed for healthy cell development and a more capable immunity system. Vegetables and fruits are excellent sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect body cells from free radicals and toxic compounds. Limiting your intake of fatty and sugary foods also helps fight and lower your risk of inflammatory conditions. Lean meats provide the body with amino acids, the essential building blocks for a healthy body. You might also want to limit or quit alcohol all together too.

4. Disinfect Surfaces and Wash Your Hands Regularly

Make a habit of washing your hands with soap and running water regularly. Doing so helps wash off any germs (bacteria, viruses, etc.) you might have picked unknowingly. It’s worth noting that viruses can live on surfaces for a day, a reason you want to be wiping these surfaces frequently as well. Use a hand sanitizer or antibacterial hand wash to wash these viruses off your hands. It would also be wise to disinfect your workstation and home regularly to avoid spreading the virus.
