The Importance Of Caregiver’s Well-being
Part 1
A caregiver is the first person that comes to mind whenever looking for someone to help take care of us or if a loved one requires specialized attention and care. Depending on the patient’s condition and needs, most caregivers have to give their all to the patient, neglecting their most basic needs. Such neglect builds up over time and could have a devastating impact on the caregiver’s health and well-being. This often affects their ability to do their job well; which reasons caregivers should be empowered and encouraged to take care of themselves.
In this article, we will discuss the main roles of a caregiver, the cost of caregiving, and how caregivers can take care of themselves for better health and well-being.
Who Is A Caregiver
responsibility of looking after a sick person, a child, a disabled person, and/or the elderly. Often mistaken to be a simple task, caregiving is a full-time job, often more demanding than your regular office job. Most caregivers cannot really define what their job/responsibility entails. Some of the most common caregiving responsibilities include:
- Preparing and cooking meals for the patient
- Handling all housekeeping duties in the patient/loved one’s home
- Handling financial matters, e.g., paying bills
- Outdoor maintenance, including watering and caring for the lawn
- Provide companionship to the patient (especially those that have lost a social connection)
- Get prescriptions (or refills) for the patient/loved one
- Ensure the loved one takes his/her medication on time
- Take the patient for checkups
How Caregivers Assume Their Role
The need for a caregiver (or for one to step up) arises when/if a loved one is diagnosed with a terminal condition, sudden accident, or has a life-changing event that makes it almost impossible for him/her to take care of themselves. In most instances, many people will assume slowly but steadily assume the role of a caregiver over time. This mainly happens when the patient takes longer to heal or his/her health continues to decline. A caregiver may come into this role immediately if:
- A loved one has a medical emergency
- Sudden and fatal accident befalls a loved one
- A loved one is unable to handle even the simplest of tasks (e.g., recall where their home is)
The Average Caregiver’s Profile
Women are more likely to take up the role of a caregiver as compared to men. Statistically, more than 70% of all caregivers in the United States are women. Cultural and gender roles make it easier for a woman to take up a caregiving responsibility. Their loving nature and tender care make them the perfect fit for a caregiver. It is also worth noting that the biggest percentage of female caregivers are working caregivers balancing their regular work with caregiving responsibilities. Many of these are within the 45 and 49 age group.
