The Importance Of Caregiver’s Well-being
Part 2
The Cost of Caregiving
Caregivers have to sacrifice a lot of their energy, time, focus, and finances to look after their loved ones. Such devotion and sacrifice can have a significant impact on the average caregiver’s well-being and health. Outlined below are some of the caregiving costs you need to know about.
1. Time
time for hobbies of personal care.
2. Finances
The caregiver is, in most instances, responsible for the loved one’s needs and wants. He/she thus has to take on most, if not all, financial costs for the loved one, including:
- Purchase of prescription drugs
- Groceries and other essentials for the patient’s home
- Transportation costs
Other miscellaneous costs that come with caregiving include:
- Paying for lawn care maintenance
- Hiring housekeeping services to help keep the loved one’s home clean and tidy
- Buying take-outs to cater for times when you cannot prepare meals on time.
3. The Cost Of Focus
Around 16% of all caregivers have a part-time or full-time job other than the caregiving job. They thus have to divide their attention between the paid job with looking for the loved one. This can take a toll on the caregiver’s performance, especially if the patient is too demanding. One thus has to work a lot harder to maintain balance, another reason for caregivers neglecting themselves.
How Caregivers Can Look After Themselves
1. Take Inventory & Plan Ahead
While you may be forced to take on the caregiving responsibility immediately, it would probably be best to analyze and understand what will be required of you first. This will make it easier to plan ahead of time and know exactly what will be required of you and when. The first step will be to take inventory of everything and set realistic goals to achieve or implement the same goals. Here are a few tips and steps to get you started.
- Understand the diagnosis and symptoms of the terminal condition.
- Obtain his/her crucial financial and legal documentation
- Understand how much insurance cover he/she has
2. Take Care Of Your Wellbeing
Most caregivers will be so focused on looking after their loved ones, hence forget all about their health and wellbeing. Doing so can leave you fatigued, weak, and even sick. You, however, don’t want to be sick or feel drained, especially with your loved ones looking up to you. It’s only when you are in your best state and health that you’ll be able to care for those you love. Find time to look after yourself, take a break, shower, and even go out to breathe some fresh air. Your body needs it. Some of the best ways to care for yourself include:
- Get enough sleep at night (This allows the body to self-repair and rejuvenate, ready for the next day)
- Have a well-balanced meal plan (this will help provide your body and brain with the much-needed energy)
- Pick up a hobby, or find ways to re-energize and reinvigorate.
