How Stress Can Severely Affect Seniors?

7 Effects Of Stress On Seniors

As we age, our bodies ability to deal with stress declines. This is because our brain’s natural response to stress – called the fight or flight response – changes as we get older.

When your body doesn’t react to stress as it used to, your physical health suffers. As a result, you might be more susceptible to health issues such as a weakened immune system, heart problems, and digestive problems.

1. Lowered Immune System

Stress can lead to a lowered immune system which can be hard on seniors. This can lead to frequent colds, difficulty fighting off infections, and fatigue.

A weakened immune system can be caused by a variety of factors including your diet, certain medications, or even an autoimmune disorder. If you’re experiencing a weakened immune system, eat more fruits and vegetables, get plenty of sleep, and exercise regularly.

Chronic stress can suppress or dysregulate innate and adaptive immune responses by altering the type 1/type 2 cytokine balance, resulting in low-grade inflammation and inhibiting immuno-protective cells. These alterations may contribute to a wide range of health conditions such as heart disease and cancer.

A recent study found that people with higher stress scores had older-seeming immune profiles, with lower percentages of fresh disease fighters and a higher number of worn-out T-cells. These effects were observed even after controlling for other factors such as education, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, and race or ethnicity. Interestingly, those who were able to maintain a good diet and exercise habits offset this effect somewhat.

2. Heart Problems

Stress can make the heart work harder to pump blood around your body. This can lead to problems like angina (chest pain caused by temporarily reduced blood flow to the heart muscle) and a heart attack.

It can also cause a buildup of fluid in the lungs, which could cause shortness of breath with exercise or difficulty breathing when you are lying flat in bed. This can be a sign that your heart is struggling to do its job.

In addition to stress, other factors can affect the heart such as high blood pressure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. All of these conditions are known to increase the risk of heart disease and can result in premature heart attacks.

Fortunately, seniors can take steps to help prevent these conditions. Managing stress is one of the first things they should do to keep their heart healthy.

3. Vision & Hearing Loss

One of the most common effects of stress on seniors’ health is vision and hearing loss. In addition to making it harder for seniors to complete day-to-day tasks, loss of vision and hearing can also make it more difficult for them to interact with others.

When the body is under stress, it releases more adrenaline and cortisol than normal. This can cause many different symptoms, including eye strain, double vision, and visual distortion.

In a study of older adults, researchers found that increased levels of stress were linked to more vision problems in the following 3 years. Additionally, more negative attitudes toward aging and higher levels of depression were directly related to more issues with hearing in the same time period.

The findings from this research should give seniors another reason to find ways to manage their stress. Taking the time to relax, reappraise goals or experiences and address any other psychological issues may help stave off sensory impairments.

4. Digestive Issues

The gastrointestinal (GI) system is an important part of senior health. It regulates the digestive process by breaking down food into its components for your body to use, so any problems with this system can have a serious impact on your health.

Some common GI disorders seniors may experience include constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. They can also be triggered by medications, foods, viruses, allergies, and diseases.

There are a number of things you can do to help avoid digestive issues and improve your overall health. Eating more fiber, avoiding excessive salt and processed foods, cutting down on fatty red meat, eating less coffee or alcohol, and getting regular exercise are all helpful.

You should also check with your doctor to make sure you aren’t taking any medication that can cause heartburn or GERD. Medications such as NSAIDs and aspirin can increase your risk of reflux, so be sure to talk with your doctor about the right dose.

Stress can have a huge effect on the gastrointestinal system. It can slow the digestive process, stop it temporarily, or even trigger a functional GI disorder, which is a condition that has no known physical cause but can be caused by stress.

5. Dental Issues

Stress can have a long-term impact on your dental system, especially when you are not properly taking care of your teeth. It can cause problems with your gums, and the bones in your jaw can become weak due to excessive clenching or grinding of the jaw.

Studies have shown that older adults are more likely to suffer from dental problems if they are stressed. This is why it’s important to maintain a healthy level of stress. You can do this by staying on top of your dental needs and visiting the dentist regularly for checkups.

6. Deteriorating Health

When our brains perceive a threat, they release stress hormones that cause our blood pressure to rise, our senses to sharpen, and our muscles to tighten. These are all normal physiological responses to protect us from danger, but chronic stress over time can lead to major health issues that can be difficult to deal with.

For seniors, this can take a toll on their health and overall quality of life. A weakened immune system can result in an increased risk of illnesses, and high blood pressure and cholesterol levels can increase their chances of heart disease.

If you’re caring for a senior, it’s important to watch out for signs of stress. Changing moods, a lack of interest in things they once enjoyed, and a change in eating habits can all be signs that they’re not feeling as well.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek professional help. Seniors who are under a lot of stress may also be more likely to smoke and drink alcohol, which can increase their risks of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues.

7. Losing Energy

Whether it is due to depression, grief, or a lack of physical activity, aging can cause a decrease in energy levels. This can be difficult for older adults to deal with because they are usually less capable of doing things on their own than younger people.

Practicing deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety, which in turn will increase energy levels. Yoga, tai chi, and other meditation exercises are also effective. Regular exercise can also help lower stress and increase the production of endorphins, which are natural painkillers for the brain and body.
