The new year is coming, which makes now the right time to start setting goals for when the new calendar starts. January, as always, will be that brief whisk of time when you see people ordering salads instead of burgers and fitness centers packed wall to wall. Nearly everyone wants better health and wellness, and they make many new year’s resolutions that reflect their dreams and ambitions.

That doesn’t mean that throwing out your own healthy ambitions is a smart move, though. Research has shown time and again that many family caregivers face numerous health risks. This role involves chronic stress that can result in a wide variety of health complications, and depression is a very frequent one. If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, then you’ve seen the safety vids or instructions telling you to put on your own mask before you try to help other passengers out, including your own family. The same principle applies to daily life on the ground. You have to take care of yourself first if you want to help anybody around you. Simply put, you can’t give anything to anyone if your own cup is empty and dry.

Below are the 5 goals you can set up for your self to help you be a better caregiver and become happier this new year.

1. Prioritize Your Own Health

Family caregivers are usually individuals with lots of love, as they dedicate themselves to making sure someone they care about stays as healthy as possible, even if it means sacrificing their own health. Unfortunately, caregiving carries a lot of chronic stress with it that puts these kind-hearted folks at much higher risk of severe illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

While it will never be easy, the time will come that you have to be pragmatic about looking out for yourself and your mental and physical well-being. See your physician or doctor as soon as you can in order to figure out what health needs are your most pressing concerns.

Weight loss is frequently a top priority, followed by things like getting your cholesterol down or locating a therapist that can help you out with stress and mental health. The faster you care for yourself and your own health, the better equipped you’ll feel in caring for the one that you love.

2. Take More Time To Sleep

Sleep has a tremendous influence on your overall health, but if you’re like many Americans, getting a good night of sleep on a regular basis is something you only dream of. If you’re a caregiver handling many different responsibilities, then it’s even harder to get the suggested 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night.

However, getting enough rest is crucial to better health and happiness. Start small, and just go to bed 15 minutes earlier than you used to. After a while, add another quarter of an hour at regular intervals until you’re getting your 7 hours minimum.

3. Block Out ‘Me’ Time

Time just for yourself is a precious commodity, especially if you’re a family caregiver. When you aren’t caring for someone you love, you still have many other responsibilities. Blocking out time that is just for you needs to happen a minimum of once per week because it’s crucial for your personal health and wellness.

Respite care is something that can provide you badly needed downtime while also making sure that your loved one still has good support around them. You can take advantage of many different kinds of respite care, whether it’s asking someone you trust to step up, use an adult daycare, or arrange for a short-term stay in assisted living.

4. Plan More Quality Time

Plan on spending more quality time with the loved one that you’re taking care of. You might be thinking right now that you’re already spending a lot of time with them every day or week, but think about it for a moment. How much of that time is just caring for their needs? Don’t let monotonous and routine care tasks eat up all your time with the person that you care for. Be sure to put some focus on creating fond memories along the way.

Plan for something fun at least once a week with the loved one that you’re caring for so they have a chance to reconnect with you. You could bake, go for a scenic drive, explore local museums, or just go through an old family photo album. Regardless of the activity, just be sure you can both enjoy the time outside of your normal daily care routine.

5. Make Future Care Plans

You might not want to think about it, but the might time comes that you can’t care for the person you love any longer. That might happen because of physical limitations you have, or it could just be that their symptoms and condition get too complicated for you to manage by yourself.

Researching care options in advance and planning ahead can help you avoid serious stress in the future. Based on your circumstances, that might mean assisted living or in-home care. One thing you really don’t want to think about but probably should is designating someone else as an alternate carer in your will.
