The Department of Veteran’s Affairs offers VA benefits for veterans of the U.S. armed forces and their spouses who are over the age of 65. Those who are eligible can apply for these benefits through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs and use them to cover the cost of home care. VA Pension Benefits
Senior veterans and spouses of veterans must apply for VA benefits with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs before getting VA home care from Assisting Hands. VA benefits can be used towards home care services, but you must be eligible to receive these benefits. Veterans and spouses who meet the following criteria are eligible to receive a VA pension:
- Must be 65 years old or older
- Veterans must have served at least one day during a time of war
- Surviving spouses must have been married to the veteran at their time of death
- Married couples must have a combined monthly income of less than $3000, single veterans must have a monthly income under $2600, and surviving spouses must have a monthly income below $2000
- Retirement accounts for veterans must be worth less than $123,600
Those who apply for VA benefits are likely to be asked the following questions:
- Will you spend the next year living at home?
- If you do not live at home, do you plan to return home at a certain date?
- Have you applied for, or do you receive VA benefits for wounds suffered during military service?
- Do you need help with activities of daily living (ADLs)?

VA Home Health Aid (HHA) Homemaker/ Home Health Program
With the VA Home Health program, veterans can get up to 12 hours of home care per week. Veterans must complete an evaluation for geriatric extended care (GEC) by an interdisciplinary panel including a registered nurse (RN), social worker (SW), and medical doctor (MD) before starting this program.
Veterans must also meet the following criteria:
- Significant cognitive impairment
- Dependent on help for 3 or more activities of daily living (ADLs)
VA Respite Care
If senior veterans are cared for by a relative, they may only need part time care to relieve the family caregiver. With our VA respite care, we can provide care at scheduled times to supplement the care the veteran already receives. Veterans must complete an evaluation for geriatric extended care by an interdisciplinary panel and meet the following criteria:
- Significant cognitive impairment
- Dependency for 3 or more ADLs
