10 Ways To Take Care Of Yourself As A Caregiver In Houston
Part 2
5. Open Your Heart
Love is an exciting thing. Nothing satisfies more than knowing that someone loves and adores you. That said, many caregivers dedicate their all to work, forgetting to live life. Most of these hardly notice when someone is interested in them, with some blocking the feeling altogether. Letting love triumph, and showing love to the people that matter, and especially your family can have a far-reaching impact on your health and wellbeing.
6. Give Yourself A Treat
While caregivers strive to ensure their clients/patients are happy, they too deserve happiness as well. You, therefore, shouldn’t focus only on your client but also remember that you too are wired to feel joy. Treating yourself right by getting a massage, pedicure, or special dinner in the company of your spouse or family is in itself fulfilling. Although it may not seem like much, doing so could see you go to work the next day, rejuvenated and happier.
7. Get Plenty Of Rest/Sleep
Doctors and health experts recommend at least 7 hours of sleep every day. Many caregivers will often sacrifice sleep to do a bit more for their client/patient. Unless it is absolutely necessary, you need to make sleep a priority to be able to wake up feeling rested. Our bodies, and especially body cells and tissues, recover while we sleep. The brain also processes all the information gathered during sleep. Create a sleep routine whereby you’ll be going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
8. Connect With Friends
Caregiving can be quite demanding, forcing many to isolate themselves from friends, leave along make a few. Although your family (and clients) might be all you care about, having a friend or two could improve your outlook and overall health. Studies show that the brain produces oxytocin when we are in the company of friends, and especially trusted ones. Oxytocin is the hormone responsible for suppressing stress and calming nerve cells.
9. Get A Good Laugh Whenever You Can
A good laugh is good for your health and can be perceived as a reward as well. Dealing with a patient in pain, or a demanding one for that matter can make your life pretty intense and gloomy. A good laugh whenever things don’t seem to work out, as well as when they do, will go a long way in keeping you motivated and composed. You can get your daily dose of humor by watching a funny movie, videos on Facebook, or even memes. You could also share the funny clip or meme with the person you are caring for, and have a hearty laugh together.
