At Assisting Hands Home Care, we are so used to visiting our clients in their homes, that it is a special day for us when we can play host! Last Thursday, June 20th, we had the opportunity to invite local nurses, social workers, speech language pathologists, and community members for a presentation on Parkinson’s Disease and how to effectively care for these patients.
Richard Ueberfluss, the area representative of Assisting Hands Home Care and former hospital administrator and Physical Therapist, presented the seminar. The goal was to provide information for professionals who work with these patients on a daily basis to help them remain safely in their own home. A few modifications such as grab bars, improved hallway lighting, and most importantly, LOTS of patience from the caregiver and their families help make home life easier and safer!
About Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s is a neurologically degenerative disease that affects over 1 million American seniors today. It starts out slow, but progresses over time to affect physical movements and cognitive abilities. Symptoms can include tremors, shakiness, stiff muscles, difficulties speaking, and a mask-like facial expression.
While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s Disease, caregivers can work with these individuals to ease their frustration. Exercise and medication are most important elements to slowing progress and minimizing symptoms. Assisting Hands Caregivers help by providing personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, and transportation to doctor’s appointments or exercise classes. Families should never be afraid to ask for help caring for someone with Parkinson’s Disease. It truly is a full community effort!
