Stroke Recovery Care For Downers Grove Families

The hospital gets your loved one stable. Getting them back to real life at home is a different challenge entirely. Assisting Hands Home Care provides stroke recovery care at home in Downers Grove so that process is safer, smoother, and less overwhelming for your whole family.

Our caregivers are trained specifically for the challenges stroke survivors face. They work alongside your medical and therapy team, communicate with your family regularly, and adapt the care plan as things change.

Why the first weeks at home matter most

According to a 2023 study published in PLOS ONE using the Nationwide Readmissions Database, nearly 1 in 10 stroke survivors is readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge. Separate research shows that approximately 50% of those readmissions are potentially preventable. The most common reasons include recurrent stroke, infection, and complications that proper daily monitoring could catch early.

Missed medications, falls, poor nutrition, and loss of routine are not minor oversights during recovery. They are the triggers that send people back to the hospital. Having a trained caregiver in place from day one helps protect the progress your loved one has already made and reduces the risk of a setback that could undo weeks of recovery.

What stroke recovery care at home looks like for Downers Grove Families

We build each care plan around the individual. Here is what that typically includes for stroke survivors in Downers Grove.

Personal care and hygiene assistance

Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, adapted for limited mobility or one-sided weakness. Every task is handled with patience and respect for your loved one’s dignity.

Fall prevention and safe mobility

Hands-on support for transfers, walking, and getting around the home. We also assess the home environment and identify hazards that could put your loved one at risk.

Medication reminders

Stroke survivors often take several medications on precise schedules. We keep that schedule on track and notify family members promptly if a dose is missed.

Meal preparation and nutrition

Home-cooked meals planned around your loved one’s dietary needs, including low-sodium requirements or any swallowing difficulties common after a stroke.

Therapy exercise support

We do not replace your physical or occupational therapist. We reinforce the exercises they prescribe between sessions, which is where consistency and real progress are built.

In home companionship

Depression affects a significant number of stroke survivors. A caring, consistent presence each day provides more than practical help. It keeps your loved one engaged, motivated, and less isolated.

Light housekeeping

Laundry, dishes, vacuuming, and general tidying. A clean and organized home is part of a safe recovery environment.

Transportation and errand support

Reliable, safe transportation to follow-up appointments, therapy sessions, and pharmacy visits, with attentive support from the front door to the destination and back

What we do differently for stroke survivors

Stroke care requires more than a helpful presence. It takes a caregiver who understands the physical and cognitive effects of stroke, who knows how to support independence without stepping in too quickly, and who can recognize when something has changed and needs attention.

Consistent caregiver match

Your loved one sees the same face every visit. Familiarity and trust accelerate recovery.

Stroke-specific training

Our caregivers understand one-sided weakness, cognitive changes, and the emotional impact of stroke.

Regular family communication

We keep you informed. Families are never left guessing about how their loved one is doing.

Plans that adapt over time

As your loved one progresses, we adjust the care plan to reflect where they actually are.

We know Downers Grove and we work alongside your local care team

Many of our stroke recovery care clients in Downers Grove come home from Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital on Highland Avenue, which offers dedicated stroke care and is one of the top-recognized hospitals in DuPage County. We are also familiar with UChicago Medicine AdventHealth in nearby Hinsdale and Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, both of which serve a significant number of families in our area.

We understand how post-discharge care coordination works with local providers, and we build our care plans to complement the therapy and follow-up schedules your loved one’s medical team has already put in place.

Stroke Care Related FAQs

Does Assisting Hands coordinate with Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove?

We work with families coming home from Good Samaritan regularly. While we are not formally affiliated with the hospital, we are familiar with their discharge process and the follow-up care protocols their stroke team uses. When you call us, share whatever discharge paperwork and therapy instructions you have and we will build the care plan around them.

What happens if my loved one shows signs of a second stroke while the caregiver is there?

Our caregivers are trained in first aid and CPR and know how to recognize the warning signs of a stroke using the BE-FAST method, which covers sudden changes in balance, eyesight, facial drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulty. If they observe any of these warning signs, they call 911 immediately and notify family. Having a trained person in the home rather than a loved one alone is one of the most important safety measures in early stroke recovery.

Can you provide respite care so I can take a break from caregiving?

Yes. Caregiver burnout is one of the most common and least talked about challenges in stroke recovery. We regularly provide respite care for family members who need to work, rest, travel, or simply have a few hours to themselves. Whether that is a few hours a week or an extended period, we can step in so you can step away without worrying.

My loved one's stroke affected their speech. Can your caregivers work with that?

Yes. Communication challenges after stroke, including difficulty finding words or understanding language, require patience and a specific approach. Our caregivers are trained to give extra time, use simple and clear language, avoid finishing sentences for the client, and support the communication exercises a speech therapist may have prescribed. We always encourage families to share any guidance the speech therapy team has provided so we can reinforce it consistently.
