If your senior loved one served in the armed forces in the United States, they may be eligible for this benefit which will help them pay for home care. Many seniors are deciding to age in their own homes, as opposed to going to a nursing home or an assisted living facility. If they are eligible for benefits, they can get the care they need right in their home.
Assisting Hands Home Care offers VA home health care and respite care services in Viera, FL. Eligible veterans can use their benefits to cover the cost of home care by our highly trained staff so they can get some help with daily living.
VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefit
There are many veteran seniors that may qualify for this benefit, but many of them do not even apply due to the complicated process. For this type of benefit, they may receive up to $2,200 per month so they can get at least part time home care.
Challenges to Getting VA Benefits
Seniors may qualify for the benefits however, they may not receive them as the process and paperwork is complicated, the lines may be long, and they may have to make many trips to the VA office. This is why Assisting Hands Home Care has partnered with Care Planning Institute (CPI) so they can help veterans get these benefits. They are separate from the VA and work for senior veterans. They help them apply for the benefits and guide them through the process without ever having to leave their house.
Here are some of the requirements that must be met for VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefits:
- The Veteran had to have served during wartime
- The spouse must be a widow of a wartime veteran
- The veteran had to have served at least 90 days of active duty including at least one day during wartime
- If they were discharged, it must be an honorable discharge
- They need to be 65 years of age or older
- The veteran senior must need help with activities of daily living (ADLs)
- Needs to have $123,600 or less in assets (home, cars, and personal property do not count)
- The veteran cannot have a monthly income of more than $3,000 for a couple or $2,600 for a single veteran, and $2,000 for a surviving spouse
The veteran seniors may still be audited by the VA office so they can ensure that they still qualify for benefits. The CPI agents are there for the veteran seniors to help them through the audit and ensure they can get their benefits so they can receive home care.
VA Home Health Care and Respite Care
If the senior veteran has a VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefits, these are the care programs they can get depending on need:
- VA Home Health Aide (HHA)/ Home Health Program
This allows them to get care at home. The requirements are an interdisciplinary assessment for geriatric extended care (GEC), inability to handle three or more ADLs, and cognitive impairment.
- VA Respite Care Program
This program is for temporary care, and they will still need to do an interdisciplinary assessment, have trouble with three or more ADLs, and cognitive impairment.
