The Best Types Of Pets For Seniors

Owning a pet is an experience unlike any other. Not only do they provide companionship but they are also a source of unconditional love. Seniors, in particular, can benefit in the following ways from owning a pet:

  • Pets have been shown to help lower high blood pressure.
  • Owning a pet can improve mental focus and clarity.
  • Pets can help seniors overcome loneliness by providing them with a constant companion.

When selecting a pet for a senior, it is important to put careful thought into the decision. Consider all of the following factors before deciding on a pet.

Dogs

Different dog breeds have different temperaments and personalities. Selective breeding has resulted in a variety of different breeds that are predisposed to certain activities. These activities can range from hunting to herding and everything in between. When deciding on a dog, it is important to consider the temperament of the breed.

Of course, individual dogs within a certain breed all have their own personalities. Spend time with a dog before deciding to adopt it to see what its temperament is like. Ideally, pets for seniors should be calm, quiet, and obedient.

Adopting a Dog from a Shelter

Shelter dogs have a lot to offer in terms of love and companionship. Before adopting a dog from a shelter, try to get a sense of what its past was like. Sometimes, dogs come from abusive situations. Other times, owners surrender them to the shelter because they can no longer care for them on their own.

The circumstances of a dog’s life before it came to the shelter can affect its personality. Again, this is another area where it pays to spend as much time as you can with a dog before adopting it to make sure that its temperament is well suited to your needs.

Choose a Pet with Appropriate Exercise Needs

Taking a dog for a walk is a great way to get in shape. Owning a dog naturally encourages people to be more active.

Keep in mind, however, that some dog breeds require more exercise than others. When choosing a dog for a senior, it is important to make sure that the exercise needs of the dog are compatible with the needs of the senior. For instance, a dog that needs to be taken on long walks on a daily basis may not be a good choice for someone with limited mobility.

Cats

Cats are a great choice for seniors since they are generally easy to care for and don’t have quite as much energy as dogs. At a bare minimum, cats require a litter box and a reliable source of food and water. Depending on the type of cat that you get, they may also occasionally need to see a groomer. All cats have unique personalities. Some are friendlier than others. Certain cats prefer to be left alone and can even swipe at you with their paws if they don’t want to be touched.

The same rules apply when you are adopting a cat as when you are adopting a dog. Try to spend some time with the cat before you adopt it to make sure that it has the right temperament for your needs. Additionally, if your loved one is in a Houston senior care facility, make sure that the type of pet you are choosing is allowed in the facility.

Birds

Birds make great pets for seniors. Not only are they easy to care for but they also can add a lot of life to a home. Their chirping and singing can help fill a space with beautiful sounds, alleviating loneliness and boredom in the process. In some cases, you can even teach birds to speak if you have the patience for it. If you decide to buy a bird, you will need to invest in a high-quality cage, bird feed, and a water bottle.

Think About The Needs Of The Pet And The Senior

When choosing a pet for a senior, it is important to not only think about their needs but also the needs of the animal. In most cases, the ideal pet for a senior is one that is easy to care for and that doesn’t require a ton of exercise or stimulation. Also, don’t forget to consider the cost of ongoing care. Some pets are less expensive to care for than others, depending on their needs in terms of food, medical care, and grooming.
