8 Halloween Activities for Seniors in West Houston: Fun Ways To Stay Socially Connected

October 22, 2026Community, HolidaysAssisting Hands Home Care

Halloween is a fun time of year to get together with friends and family, enjoy ghoulish treats, and make new memories. If you live in West Houston and Katy, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the holiday and stay connected with your community. Whether you’re looking to get out of the house or prefer celebrating at home, there are plenty of ways to make Halloween fun and social.

Celebrating Halloween has no age limit, so here are some Halloween activities for seniors in West Houston that give you a chance to get together with loved ones, get creative, and have a little boorific fun.

1. Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Fall Festival

A pumpkin patch or fall festival can be a fun way to get out of the house and enjoy the spooky season with others. Here are some spots in the West Houston and surrounding areas you can check out:

  • The Pumpkin Patch at First Christian Church (FCC): Located in Katy and has tons of pumpkins and gourds of various sizes.
  • Dewberry Farm: Located in Brookshire through November 8. Some activities include a pumpkin patch, pumpkin stroll, pumpkin painting, petting zoo, corn maze, rides, fireworks, haunted barn, and fun photo-ops. While the haunted barn is not wheelchair accessible, the restrooms and parking lots are handicap accessible.
  • Blessington Farms Fall on the Farm: Located in Simonton through November 22. Some activities include a pumpkin patch, pumpkin painting, hay wagon rides, and fall photo ops.

Before choosing a destination, look into parking, walking distances, restroom accessibility, admission costs, and whether the venue accommodates mobility aids. A shorter visit during a quieter time of day may be the best option if you tire easily or prefer smaller crowds. And be sure to check the weather since Houston’s October temperatures can still be warm.

2. Make Halloween Treats With Friends and Family

Food always has a way of bringing people together, and making Halloween-themed treats can turn an ordinary afternoon into a spooktacular occasion. Invite over friends, neighbors, or grandchildren to make simple seasonal recipes together.

Choose recipes that match everyone’s abilities and dietary needs. Premeasured ingredients, lightweight mixing bowls, and simple decorating tasks can make the experience more accessible. If standing for long periods of time is uncomfortable, set up a seated workspace at a kitchen table.

Find fun Halloween treats that are easy for seniors to make here.

If preparing food is too demanding, consider hosting a Halloween snack exchange instead. Everyone can bring a favorite treat, making the gathering easy to organize while still giving people a reason to come together.

3. Attend a Halloween Event at a Local Senior Center

Senior centers are great places to meet people, participate in group activities, and celebrate holidays with others in the community. Around Halloween, some centers organize parties, costume contests, themed lunches, craft sessions, and other special events.

The Fussell Senior Citizen Center in Katy offers a variety of activities throughout the year, including games, classes, crafts, and holiday celebrations like costume contests. The Thomas A. Glazier Senior Education Center in West Houston also provides opportunities for you to participate in educational programs, group activities, and community events.

Check each center’s calendar or contact the staff to ask about Halloween programming, registration requirements, and accessibility. Even if a special Halloween event isn’t scheduled, going to a regular activity can be a great way to spend time with others.

4. Paint and Decorate Pumpkins

Rather than carving big pumpkins with unwieldy knives, decorate small pumpkins and gourds with paint, stickers, ribbons, markers, or other easy-to-handle materials. Turn it into a social gathering by inviting neighbors, friends, or family. You could even organize a friendly contest — the most creative pumpkin wins!

5. Host a Halloween Movie Afternoon

If you prefer some cozy time indoors, host a Halloween movie afternoon. Invite a few friends or family members and choose a selection of scary movies. If not everyone enjoys frightening films, consider a mix of lighthearted Halloween comedies, classic mysteries, or nostalgic favorites, such as Ghostbusters, Hocus Pocus, and It’s a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

6. Organize a Costume Contest

Host a simple costume contest for neighbors, friends, and family. Even if you’re not into full-blown costumes or have mobility limitations, you can still be festive with a themed hat or Halloween accessory. You can also serve apple cider, hot chocolate, or Halloween-themed snacks.

7. Play Halloween-Themed Games

Halloween-themed games are a great option for some easygoing Halloween activities for seniors. Here are some fun options:

  • Halloween bingo: Play standard bingo using candy corn or mini Halloween candies for markers. Or create your own bingo cards filled with Halloween images, like bats, jack-o’-lanterns, and spiders, instead of numbers.
  • Halloween charades: Write down Halloween-themed words and phrases, and have some players act them out while others guess.
  • Halloween Trivia: Play with friends and family by asking them fun questions about classic Halloween movies, traditions, or spooky facts.

8. DIY Halloween Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts offer a relaxing way to connect with others without the pressure of attending a large event. Consider inviting a couple of friends or family members to join you as you make things like paper bats, small treat bags, or a ghostly centerpiece.
