Paying for Home Care in Colorado: Costs, Insurance & Financial Resources
Finding the right in-home care is an important decision for families, and understanding how to pay for care is often one of the biggest questions.
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we provide personalized, non-medical in-home care for seniors and adults throughout Littleton, Lakewood, Highlands Ranch, Denver, and surrounding Colorado communities. Families may use several different resources to help pay for care, depending on their individual circumstances, benefits, and eligibility.
What Are Your Options for Paying for Home Care?
Home care can be paid for in several ways. Common options include:
- Private pay and personal savings
- Long-term care insurance
- Veterans benefits and programs
- Caregiver support and dementia-related programs
- Long-term care benefit networks such as The Helper Bees
- Other financial resources that may be available to your family
Because every family’s situation is different, we recommend reviewing your available benefits and discussing your care needs before making financial decisions.

Private Pay Home Care
Many families pay for home care using personal savings, retirement income, or other private funds.
Private-pay home care allows families to choose the type and amount of assistance that best fits their needs. Care may range from a few hours of assistance to extended or 24-hour care, depending on availability, scheduling, and the individual’s care needs.
At Assisting Hands, we can help families understand how different schedules and levels of care may affect their overall cost.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Some long-term care insurance policies provide benefits that can be used toward qualifying home care services.
Coverage varies significantly between policies. Your policy may have specific requirements related to eligibility, activities of daily living, waiting periods, benefit amounts, or approved providers.
If you have long-term care insurance, we encourage you to review your policy and contact your insurance provider to understand your available benefits.
Veterans Benefits
Veterans and qualifying surviving spouses may have access to programs that can help with certain care-related expenses.
One benefit families may want to explore is VA Aid and Attendance. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances and VA requirements.
Assisting Hands can help families understand their home care needs while they explore available veteran resources.
Dementia Care & the Medicare GUIDE Model
Families caring for someone living with dementia may encounter additional resources designed to support both the individual and their caregivers.
The Medicare GUIDE Model is designed to provide support and care navigation for people living with dementia and their unpaid caregivers through participating organizations.
Eligibility, participating organizations, and available services can vary. Families should speak with their healthcare provider or a participating GUIDE organization. to determine whether they qualify.
Original Medicare generally does not cover ongoing non-medical home care, such as companionship, housekeeping, or personal care, when those are the only services needed. Some programs, such as the Medicare GUIDE Model, may cover limited services.
The Helper Bees & Long-Term Care Benefits
Assisting Hands may also work with families through benefit networks such as The Helper Bees.
These networks can help connect eligible long-term care insurance policyholders with participating care providers.
If your insurance company or benefits administrator has referred you through The Helper Bees, our team can help you understand the next steps and discuss your care needs.
Other Financial Resources for Home Care
Depending on your circumstances, you may also want to explore resources such as:
- Medicaid-related programs
- Reverse mortgages
- Retirement savings
- Family-funded care
- Other community or benefit programs
Not every resource is appropriate or available to every family. Eligibility and coverage requirements should always be confirmed with the organization administering the program.
How Much Does Home Care Cost?
The cost of in-home care depends on several factors, including:
- Number of hours of care needed
- Frequency of visits
- Type of assistance required
- Length of each shift
- Whether care is needed overnight
- Whether care is needed around the clock
- The individual’s changing care needs
Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all estimate, we recommend starting with a conversation about your family’s specific situation.
