It’s good to check out different activities available in the community, and there may be some activities geared specifically towards seniors. In some cities, senior centers have evening dinners that your parent can attend. If they don’t have transportation, often the human resource center has a group of volunteers who provide rides to and from the dinner. Whether your mother or father makes this a weekly engagement or an occasional night out it can be a fun activity with friends and neighbors.
A night out (or day out) may include going to the movies. Many theaters offer discount ticket prices either one day a week or for a particular showing each day. If your mom or dad has no one to attend with, often a caregiver may join your loved one and enjoy a movie and a box of popcorn with them.
During the summer months, festivals and evening concerts are very popular in many towns across the U.S. A caregiver may help your loved one plan a trip to one of these events and for a small fee your parent can have an opportunity to step out on the town with a group of people with similar interests.
Sometimes it is best not to ask your parent what they want to do, but suggest an activity they enjoy such as an evening night out and guide them in making the arrangements.
