Activities for Seniors and Caregivers to Stay Busy

January 15, 2019msoltisBlog

Senior home care providers understand that seniors often get bored during the day with nothing to do.

Activities for Seniors and Their Caregivers to Stay BusyMany seniors simply do not know the available options for them around their towns for them to stay busy. The best way to get out and enjoy life, is to get up and explore.

Stay Active

We aren’t suggesting that your mother or father dislocate a hip or throw out their back in an attempt to get active, but to get out and about and give themselves a chance to be active. In fact, you may be surprised how busy your mom or dad can be.

You may think they are sitting around in their bed clothes most of the day watching TV and dozing off due to boredom. However, in-home caregivers say most seniors want to be actively engaged and stay busy.

Get Involved in Activities

For the lonely parent, sitting at home with no transportation to get to the various activities in the community can be dull and bad for the health. Elder in home care experts recommend checking with the local office on aging or chamber of commerce in your city or town to help your parent find something fun to do.

Volunteers can often transport seniors and individuals who cannot drive to the various programs in town. Another option may include a caregiver provided by our in-home care agency who may transport mom or dad to special events of interests.

Choosing In-Home Care Instead of Assisted Living

Most elderly parents want to remain independent and prefer staying in their homes rather than having the family move them to an assisted living or community living facility. Although these senior living facilities often have many active programs planned for your parents, many elderly adults prefer having the ability to remain in their personal space and maintain some private time outside of their social life.

However, interaction is important to keep the brain fresh and aware. For your parent, staying busy may include:

  • Housework
  • Attending a session at the senior center
  • Visiting with a neighbor
  • Volunteering with a non-profit group
  • Working on a hobby
  • Going to the library
