The Do’s and Don’ts of Prescription Medications

December 1, 2019Assisting HandsHome Care, Senior Care

Do's and Don'ts of Prescription MedicationsNavigating the world of prescription medications can be complex and daunting. While these medications offer crucial benefits in managing various health conditions, their safe and effective use requires careful attention and adherence to certain guidelines.  By understanding the do’s and don’ts of prescription medications, individuals can empower themselves to make informed decisions and maximize the benefits of their prescribed treatments while minimizing risks.

Medication Reminders for Seniors

Medications can cause a variety of problems, specifically for aging seniors. If you have medical concerns for your mom or dad, a caregiver may be the answer. A major concern is often side-effects or interactions with other medications. Having the support system of a trained home care aide to monitor medications, doses, and oversee directions may be helpful. They can also note any symptoms that may be cause for alarm and can be available to treat or request immediate treatment when necessary.

Awareness of Medication Side Effects

Home care providers may advise you and your loved one of the six major concerns that medications can cause rather than treat. Most drugs prescribed have possible side effects for senior adults with multiple medical complications. These effects may not only cause severe illness but in some cases irreversible systems leading to death.

Medicines prescribed for overactive bladder or irritable bowel syndrome often lead to dehydration, dry skin, and rashes that may become infected and require additional medication. Your parent(s) may then become dependent on the caregiver until medical treatment resolves the cause of the illness or your parent may need long-term care.

Drug Interactions

Drug interactions can occur at any age, however, for older adults who are taking different drugs daily, the balance can be delicate. Many seniors take prescription medication, over the counter and herbal supplements which may cause them to become very ill due to the combinations of both natural and synthetic drug.

Having in home care for seniors will provide your loved one with professionals who will work with them to identify the proper and needed medications for their specific needs, reducing medication abuse.
