In Home Senior Care Services Experts Discuss How To Help Aging Adults Treat Vertigo

March 24, 2016msoltisBlog

in home senior care services, this condition is far from entertaining and can lead to falls and injuries if your parent overreacts. This form of dizziness is very common among senior citizens. Believe it or not, there is an easy fix.

It’s important to understand what may be causing vertigo. Often this condition is due to an inner ear condition which may be viral or bacterial. According to providers of in home senior care services, your mom or dad may need to be checked for Meniere’s disease. This is a disorder of the inner ear and not only can it cause imbalance and dizziness but also ringing in the ears and hearing loss. In home senior care services experts suggest if this is a recurring situation, your parent should notify their medical team for a full ear and hearing exam.

However, the easy fix is simply turning the head from side to side. In home senior care services experts explain that there are calcium crystals in the inner ear, called “otoconia,” which make you sensitive to gravity. These crystals are located in the utricle and help provide balance. If these crystals dislodge, this will cause vertigo. Mom or dad should remain in either a prone position (lying flat), or if this occurs while sitting in a chair, stay seated. If they are alone, they can slowly turn their head side to side to get the crystals to float back where they belong; this typically takes about five minutes. In home senior care services experts can assist your loved one by holding their head gently and helping them rotate it, tilting their ear to their shoulder slightly and bringing back to center and repeating on the other side.
