An estimated 7.4 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and roughly 580,000 of them live here in Florida, about one in eight Florida residents over 65. Because Alzheimer’s and related dementias are progressive, memory and reasoning decline as the disease advances. Care that begins early tends to be easier on everyone as the senior adjusts to a caregiver while introductions still make sense to them, and the family gets help before exhaustion sets in.

Most seniors prefer to stay in the house they know as they age rather than move to a facility across the causeway. Familiar surroundings reduce the confusion and anxiety that come with dementia, which is why home is usually the best setting for dementia care. Family members can carry much of that responsibility, but few can manage it all indefinitely. Trained in-home care helps fill the gaps, providing reliable support while allowing relatives to focus on being family rather than full-time caregivers.

In-Home Dementia Care in Satellite Beach

For Alzheimer’s and dementia care in Satellite Beach, Florida, call Assisting Hands Home Care at (321) 455-5778 and ask about a free in-home consultation.

Our caregivers assist Satellite Beach seniors along A1A, in the neighborhoods off South Patrick Drive, and in the surrounding beachside towns. Visits can be scheduled for a few hours a day, extended into full days, or arranged as 24-hour and live-in care when a senior can no longer be left alone. We adjust the schedule as the disease progresses instead of asking your family to start over with a new agency.

Assisting Hands Home Care – Brevard County is also an official GUIDE Program dementia support partner, a Medicare model built around helping people with dementia remain in their own homes.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Types of Dementia

People often use the terms “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” as if they mean the same thing. Dementia is the broader category, a group of conditions that damage memory, judgment, language, and other thinking skills severely enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, responsible for an estimated 60 to 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia account for much of the rest, and some seniors have more than one type at once.

The distinction matters in practice because the types don’t behave identically. A senior with Lewy body dementia may have vivid hallucinations and unsteady walking early on, while someone with Alzheimer’s usually loses recent memories first. Our care managers ask about the diagnosis during the initial assessment and build the care plan around what your loved one is experiencing.

Signs Families Notice First

Early symptoms are easy to write off as normal aging, and families frequently look back and realize the changes started a year or two before anyone said anything out loud. Warning signs worth paying attention to include:

  • Repeated forgetfulness: Asking the same question several times in one conversation, misplacing everyday items, or forgetting a recent phone call. Occasional lapses happen to everyone; a pattern is different.
  • Disorientation and wandering: Confusion about time or place can lead a senior to leave the house without a destination in mind. On the barrier island, that carries real risk, with A1A traffic and the ocean and the river both within walking distance.
  • Personality and mood changes: Suspicion, withdrawal from church or club activities, sudden irritability, or agitation late in the afternoon. Many seniors sense that something is wrong and get frustrated or frightened by it.
  • Trouble with familiar tasks: Difficulty following a recipe, paying bills, or driving a route they have taken for decades.
  • Neglected household basics: Spoiled food in the refrigerator, unopened mail piling up, or laundry left undone in a home that used to be spotless.

If several of these sound familiar, ask your loved one’s physician for a cognitive evaluation. An accurate diagnosis opens the door to treatment, planning, and support that guesswork does not.

Our Alzheimer’s Home Care Services

Caregivers who work with our memory care clients receive dementia-specific training in redirection, communication, and de-escalation. Combating and arguing only makes the moment worse. Our caregivers learn how to meet a client where they are and steer the day back to something calm.

Alzheimer’s and dementia care from Assisting Hands includes:

  • Supervision and wandering safety: Our caregivers stay with your loved one, walk alongside them when they get restless, and keep an eye on doors and exits.
  • A safer home setup: During the initial visit, we look for tripping hazards, poor lighting, and other risks, then suggest practical changes that make the home easier to move through.
  • Memory and engagement activities: Photo albums, familiar music, card games, folding laundry, and sorting mail are simple activities that keep the mind working and give the day some shape.
  • Personal care: Help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and incontinence care, handled in a way that protects your loved one’s dignity.
  • Meal preparation: Cooking becomes hazardous for seniors who forget a burner is on. Our caregivers shop for groceries, prepare meals, and make sure your loved one is eating and drinking enough through the day.
  • Medication reminders: Prompting your loved one to take the right medication at the right time and letting the family know when something is missed.
  • Light housekeeping and laundry: Keeping the living space clean and uncluttered, which reduces both confusion and fall risk.
  • Companionship: Conversation, company, and someone in the house who is glad to be there. Companionship is often what family members tell us they notice first.

Respite Care for Satellite Beach Family Caregivers

Caring for a spouse or parent with dementia is a job with no scheduled hours. The people doing it get worn down, and their own health tends to slip while they are focused on someone else’s. That is not a failure of dedication, it is what happens when one person tries to cover a 24-hour condition alone.

Bringing in a caregiver for a set number of hours each week gives you time to see your own doctor, sleep, or spend an afternoon somewhere other than the house. Families who need coverage through the night often start with overnight care, since sundowning and nighttime wandering are what usually break a caregiver’s sleep first. Many Satellite Beach households also include veterans and military retirees connected to Patrick Space Force Base. We can discuss VA benefits that may help cover in-home care.

I can't say enough about Assisting Hands of Brevard. The office staff is so kind, efficient, professional and accommodating. The caretakers who were provided were so very kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and so caring toward my husband who has Alzheimer's. His condition was re-evaluated requiring a change in approach to his care. However, should his condition take another turn and require home care, we would call on Assisting Hands in a nano-second!

My parents needed care as my mom's Alzheimer's began to progress. From the beginning the staff has been awesome! The first person my parents and I met with was Anna their Care Manager. She was patient, sincere and spent over two hours with us explaining the services and supports Assisting Hands provides. Even before services began Tyler, the owner, reached out to explain a billing question. When the care takers began they were wonderful! So gentle and patient with my mom. DLinda you are the best! We trust and appreciate Assisting Hands so much, that after my parent's failed attempt at an assisted living facility, we called Assisting Hands and are using them again. We are so lucky to get one of the original ladies back. The staff is like family. I honestly don't know where I would be with my parent's care without them. Thank you Tyler, Anna, DLinda and Pat.

I can’t say enough great things about Assisting Hands! When my mom was diagnosed with cancer we needed helping caring for my dad who had dementia. The staff at Assisting Hands were amazing (from the owner, nurse manager to the care givers) and didn’t just care for my dad, they cared about him! They also supported my brother and I during this most difficult season. Would definitely recommend this agency.
