5 Easy Steps To Improve the Quality of Life for a Loved One

January 6, 2021Lifestyle, SeniorsEmmie Knox
At Assisting Hands Home care in West Austin, we know that it takes constant effort and creativity to help improve the quality of life for your loved ones as they age, and we are here to help. In 2021, as we all set out to make our New Year’s Resolutions, let’s take a look a few easy steps to help your loved ones live the best life they can have, based on their individual circumstances.
First off, it is paramount to meet their needs for daily living — but then you can also consider how important it is to improve their everyday joy and quality of life. Fortunately, incorporating some simple and easy things can have a dramatic effect on their happiness and outlook. So with that said, here are five easy steps to improve the quality of life and have a positive change:
  1. Learning. Many studies have shown that learning something new not only staves off boredom, but can also help prevent dementia. In 2021, it’s clear that using technology can allow seniors to learn just about anything, from how to play guitar to speaking Japanese. On Youtube, there are videos that make learning easy, safe, and fun, and on phones and other mobile devices there are tons of education apps, with more being released every day.
  2. Smoothies! How can you not be happy when having a smoothie? Plus, a smoothie is a simple way and easy way to eat your daily servings of fruits and veggies. Smoothies are filled with fiber, vitamins, and minerals and there are a ton of possibilities for every individual set of taste buds. Even better, smoothies are quite cost-effective: ingredients are fairly inexpensive, they’re easy to make, and you can plan ahead by preparing fruits and vegetables to be frozen in a freezer bag. Explore the possibilities! Add kale, spinach, turmeric, pineapples, berries. Also, ripened bananas are especially nice to freeze for smoothies, as they add a natural sweetness and creaminess when blended.
  3. Reduce clutter. An important and simple change to make this year is to remove clutter from the living space of your loved one. This will not only reduce the risk of a fall or other accident, it makes accessibility easier and often adds to peace of mind, as clutter in a space tends to make people anxious. However, remember that one person’s clutter is another person’s treasure, so consider donating the items to Goodwill.
  4. Subscription boxes. In the past few years, an explosion in innovative home subscription boxes has allowed people across the country to find creative and fun activities, delivered directly to their door. One place to explore home subscription boxes for seniors is at HelloSubscriptions.com. They offer a wide variety of fun, monthly subscriptions such as “Grandma’s Joy Box” which offers a creative way to make memories. An internet search will provide many senior related options as well.
  5. Mindfulness. This goes for every year, and 2021 is no exception. There is a lot of research supporting the importance of mindfulness, and mindful activities are easy, helpful, and free. A little meditation or chair yoga can greatly improve quality of life. Also writing down your feelings, goals, and prayers in a journal can be extremely beneficial and therapeutic.
