If you believe you or your loved ones are eligible to receive VA Aid & Attendance benefits, you need to apply for these benefits through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. The benefits you receive can be used to help cover the cost of VA home care services.
To be eligible for VA Aid & Attendance benefits, veterans and their spouses must meet the following criteria:
- Veterans and their spouses must be 65 or older to apply
- Veterans must have at least one day of service during wartime
- Surviving spouses must have been married to the veteran when they died
- Veterans must have no more than $123,600 in their retirement account
- The total monthly income must be less than $3000 for married couples, $2600 for single veterans, and $2000 for surviving spouses
When you apply for your VA pension through the Department of Veterans Affairs, be ready to answer these questions:

VA Homemaker/ Home Health Aid (HHA) Program
Through our VA homemaker/ home health aid (HHA) program, veterans and their spouses can cover 12 hours of home care per week with their VA benefits. To receive VA home care through this program, those who are eligible must complete an evaluation for geriatric extended care (GEC) from a mixed discipline panel that includes a social worker (SW), registered nurse (RN), and medical doctor (MD).
Those applying for this home care program must also meet one of the following criteria:
- Significant cognitive impairment
- Dependency for 3 or more activities of daily living (ADLs)
VA Respite Care
Some senior veterans and their spouses may already receive care from their relatives. However, family caregivers will likely need a break which is where respite care can come in handy. At Assisting Hands, we provide VA respite care services to help families who provide care for their veteran senior loved ones. Veterans who are eligible for VA benefits can put their benefits towards the cost of our VA respite care services.
To receive VA respite care services, veterans and their spouses must by evaluated by an interdisciplinary panel for geriatric extended care and meet one of the following criteria:
- Require assistance for 3 or more ADLs
- Experience significant cognitive impairment
