Do Hospice Care Programs Provide 24-Hour Care?

January 16, 2025Assisting Hands

Key Summary: Hospice care focuses on comfort for seniors with terminal illnesses, managing pain and providing emotional and spiritual support. While traditional in-home hospice care includes routine visits and 24/7 phone support, it typically does not offer round-the-clock bedside care. Families can supplement hospice services with 24-hour home care from agencies like Assisting Hands Home Care. Professional caregivers provide continuous non-medical assistance, including meal preparation, hygiene support, mobility help, and companionship, ensuring seniors remain comfortable at home.

Hospice care is intended to elevate the quality of life for someone diagnosed with a terminal condition. Traditional hospice care doesn’t normally include 24-hour coverage. However, elderly patients can receive 24-hour care by including non-medical hospice care at home from a home care agency.

What is hospice care?

Seniors who receive a terminal diagnosis and have six months or less to live are eligible to receive hospice care. This form of compassionate care does not attempt to cure disease but provide comfort toward the end of life for both patients and their families.

Hospice teams focus on pain and symptom management to give the senior comfort. In addition to fulfilling the older adult’s physical needs, hospice care addresses their spiritual, emotional, and social well-being. With respect for their preferences, senior lives their final days as they wish.

Where is hospice care provided?

Older adults may receive hospice care in a range of locations. Hospitals provide hospice care in designated hospice units as do freestanding hospice facilities. However, hospice care is most often received at home, in familiar surroundings and near loved ones.

Who provides hospice care?

A hospice care team provides comprehensive care to the senior in the final stages of life. The multidisciplinary team may include hospice physicians, nurses, social workers, and volunteers. A chaplain may also be involved to provide spiritual comfort to the senior and their loved ones.

How long is a hospice care stay?

Hospice care meets the care needs of seniors in the final six months of life. However, the average length of time an older individual spends in hospice is 17 days. If the hospice patient improves during their stay and no longer has a terminal diagnosis, they are discharged.

Do hospice programs provide 24-hour care?

When a senior requires intensive care, 24-hour hospice care may be appropriate. For a brief duration, caregivers provide the necessary medical care in multiple shifts over a 24-hour period. Continuous care for acute symptoms prevents the senior from being admitted to a hospital.

For example, 24-hour care may be critical when the older adult experiences severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing or uncontrolled pain. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that persist may require continuous hospice care, as do changes in the senior’s level of consciousness.

However, most traditional in-home hospice programs do not provide 24-hour care. Rather, they provide 8 hours of care over a 24-hour period. A hospice nurse, though not at the senior’s bedside 24 hours a day, is available via phone 24/7, even on holidays and weekends.

How does home care complement traditional in-home hospice care?

Since 24-hour care is not available in the majority of in-home hospice programs, seniors and their families can utilize the services of a home care agency. In-home hospice caregivers from a home care agency can provide the continuous coverage seniors need.

The home care agency ensures a professional caregiver is present 24 hours a day. Continuous care may necessitate multiple caregivers working in shifts over a 24-hour period. The elderly patient receives the quality care they desire, when they need it.

By incorporating additional home care into a hospice care program, the senior’s care needs for comfort and well-being are met. The traditional hospice team, which is available 24 hours a day by phone, should be contacted if medical emergencies or concerns arise.

In the meantime, the professional caregiver addresses the older adult’s daily non-medical care needs. Caregivers prepare healthy meals and provide medication reminders. Seniors receive discreet help with hygiene tasks, such as toileting, dressing, and bathing. Mobility support is also provided.

Traditional hospice care continues, as the hospice nurses visit the home routinely to assess the senior’s condition, administer medications and help manage symptoms. Hospice volunteers also visit to provide companionship or other non-medical services to promote the senior’s well-being.

Traditional hospice care programs also provide the necessary medical equipment, such as a hospital bed or wheelchair. If medications are required to ease symptoms of the terminal illness, the hospice program provides them. Oxygen supplies are also offered when medically needed.

A full-time hospice professional is not always available at the senior’s home. But a professional live-in or 24-hour caregiver from a home care agency is the solution. Caregivers are ready to fulfill the continual care needs of the older hospice patient in the comfort of their own home.

Hospice Care at Home from Assisting Hands

Seniors who prefer a caregiver be present 24 hours a day can rely on hospice home care from Assisting Hands Home Care. We provide a comprehensive range of non-medical care services to keep the elderly safe and comfortable. Plus, our services allow the senior to remain at home.

We offer dependable live-in care and 24-hour care. Both of these forms of care ensure the senior receives continual care throughout the day and night. The older adult is supervised and cared for by 24-hour care professionals working rotating shifts. Live-in caregivers, however, take an 8-hour sleep break.

Our caregivers perform light housekeeping to ensure the home stays hygienic and remove clutter and other fall hazards to prevent injuries. We shop for groceries and prepare healthy meals. Caregivers also serve beverages to keep the elderly care recipient hydrated throughout the day.

Assistance with hygiene tasks, like bathing, dressing, and toileting, is included. We provide transportation and escort to nearby areas, like the doctor’s office or pharmacy. Our professionals are also great companions who keep seniors socially engaged with conversations, games, and hobbies.

Each of our professionals is licensed, bonded, and insured to give seniors and their families maximum peace of mind. Caregivers are trained in CPR and first aid and know how to respond in an emergency. Care plans are flexible and customized to meet the unique care needs of the elderly.

By complementing a traditional hospice program with in-home hospice care from Assisting Hands Home Care, seniors receive 24-hour care. Plus, families focus on spending time with their loved one.
