How to Stop an Elderly Parent from Spending Too Much Money

April 21, 2025Assisting Hands

When aging parents engage in impulsive spending, such as purchasing a new television and tablet in a single shopping spree, it can raise concerns for their adult children. To ensure seniors don’t outspend their savings, it’s crucial to initiate open and thoughtful conversations about finances. Here are some practical strategies caregivers and families can use to address this sensitive topic.

What are the Signs that Elderly Parents are Overspending?

Certain telltale signs may point to financial irresponsibility. Unopened mail may litter the aging parent’s tabletop. Bills that go unpaid are clear signs that the senior needs help managing their finances. The older adult may lose track of cash and checks, another sign of money trouble.

Multiple calls from creditors occur, and the older parents are unable to explain them. After buying a plethora of new items, the seniors complain about not having enough money. Or they may make several trips to the bank, which is worrisome when it is out of character.

Why Do Seniors Spend Excessively?

Many reasons exist behind seniors spending recklessly. Boredom, loneliness, and depression are frequent causes. When loved ones pass, it leaves a gaping hole—one that some seniors fill with retail therapy. Shopping offers a brief mood boost but can become addictive over time.

Products available via online stores and television shopping channels make it easy for older parents to become spendthrifts from the comfort of their couch. It’s an accessible pastime, but one that can do significant damage to the aging parents’ credit.

Dementia is another culprit. Seniors who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia experience a lack of judgment and poor decision-making. They may set out to buy one set of towels, but due to impaired memory, they may wind up buying 10, costing them far more.

Shopping is also nostalgic, especially when the senior buys items that remind them of happy times. It’s a way to reconnect with the past. Plus, spending money delivers a sense of autonomy, which is valuable for older adults whose cognitive or physical decline makes everyday activities harder to perform.

Seniors Overspending Money

How Do Families Stop Elderly Parents from Overspending?

1. Hold a Conversation

When bills are overdue and packages arrive daily at the parents’ front door, adult children should step in. Prepare to hold a conversation with the senior about their money habits. Choose a time when they are in a positive mood or take them out to their favorite restaurant.

2. Gather Evidence of Overspending

Before initiating the discussion, gather evidence of their overspending. This is easier when the family members have access to the parents’ bank accounts. Print out these statements and show them how much they spend and how much income they receive.

Adult children who don’t have access to the parents’ financial statements are advised to manually keep track of the seniors’ purchases, restaurant meals, or donations to charities. Being prepared with examples helps keep the conversation open and honest and shows them the reality of their spending.

3. Create a Spending Plan

Seniors hold on to their independence fiercely. Let them know that spending wastefully reduces the likelihood that they will have enough money to sustain them through retirement. But creating a budget will keep them financially fit as they age in place and need care.

4. Consult a Financial Planner

Adult children who can’t afford to support their parents financially should let them know. Encourage them to seek out the services of a finance expert. Working with a financial advisor helps seniors stay on track with their spending and lets them know how long their money will last.

5. Monitor Accounts

Prepaid cards are useful in helping seniors limit their spending. Replace the aging parents’ credit and debit cards with prepaid cards that also limit when and where the cards can be used. Consider asking the seniors for view-only access to their financial accounts to monitor their spending.

6. Seek a Cognitive Assessment

Families that suspect dementia is behind their parents’ lack of financial judgment may take them to the doctor for a cognitive assessment. If dementia is not behind their wasteful spending, the physician can rule it out and let the adult children try other means to deter financial recklessness.

7. Exercise Power of Attorney

Adult children who have been named as their parents’ power of attorney should contact the financial institutions and request access to the seniors’ accounts. Besides exercising the power of attorney, families can take over their parents’ trust if they’ve been named a successor trustee.

No matter which method the adult children use to stop their elderly parents from spending too much money, it’s critical to document all parts of the process to avoid future legal troubles. Follow up in-person conversations with emails so the topics discussed are recorded in written form.

Also, communicate with siblings or other relatives about financial plans made with the aging parents. Family members may be willing to take on some responsibilities so that the adult children do not shoulder them alone. Everyone should be included in the seniors’ financial health.
