If you know someone who is a Veteran and is struggling to maintain their independence, there may be a VA program available to help them.  The Homemaker and Home Health Aide Program through the VA helps to provides. home care for Veterans.  These programs will send a caregiver to the Veteran’s home on a regular basis to help with personal care or homemaking assistance.

Typically in order to qualify for these programs, you would need to meet the following basic requirements:

  • Wartime Veteran
  • Served at least 90 days of Active Duty
  • Served at least one day during a war period
  • Honorable discharge

The Veteran must be an established patient with the VA, and must need assistance with at least one Activity of Daily Living (ADL)

  • Eating
  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Bathroom Assistance

If a physician feels the patient requires such assistance, they will be referred to a VA social worker, who can authorize services.  At that point, the Veteran is free to choose any home care provider that is VA approved, such as Assisting Hands. These programs are generally free to the Veteran, or very minimal cost.
