NAMI, Orange County’s Silver Companions program is a unique initiative dedicated to providing one-on-one support for older adults aged 50 and above.

Through this volunteer-driven program, trained companions offer empathy, encouragement, and practical mental health tools.

Consequently, they help reduce feelings of loneliness and foster stronger connections among participants.

Why Become a Silver Companion?

Becoming a Silver Companion is a great and very rewarding way to give back to your community.

Not only will you make a difference in someone’s life, but you’ll also experience personal growth.

As a volunteer, you’ll take part in the following:

  • Make a Lasting Impact: By providing emotional support and companionship to older adults facing isolation or mental health challenges, you can truly change lives.
  • Develop Meaningful Connections: Additionally, you’ll build strong, supportive relationships and gain valuable skills in active listening and empathy.

Companionship Criteria:

  • Age Requirement: Volunteers should be 50 years or older.
  • Commitment Level: You’ll offer companionship to four peers over a 12-week period, with weekly contact via in-person meetings, Zoom, or over the phone.

Are You Seeking Support?

In addition to our Assisting Hands services, if you’re an older adult in need of extra support, the Silver Companions program is here for you.

You’ll receive:

  • Personalized Guidance: You’ll strengthen relationships, improve communication, and learn stress-management techniques. As a result, your overall well-being will improve.
  • Free Participation: The program is completely free, with weekly sessions for 12 weeks.

How to Get Involved

If you’re interested in becoming a Silver Companion or a participant, you have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

To learn more about the program, contact NAMI Orange County at 657-643-7416, email [email protected], or visit namioc.org/mentoring.
