Home Health Aide Program

The VA Home Health Aide (HHA) program provides in-home assistance to elderly veterans. It is funded by the VA, so services are available at no cost to eligible veterans. Our aides work under the supervision of registered nurses and tailor care to each veteran’s needs.

How our caregivers help

  • Walking and transfer assistance
  • Paying bills and managing money
  • Light housekeeping
  • Medication reminders
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Transportation to appointments
  • Shopping and errands
  • Using the telephone

How to qualify

    Be enrolled in VA health care. Eligibility is determined by a clinical assessment of your need for in-home help.

    Need regular help with daily living to stay independent at home.

    Ask your VA Primary Care Provider for an assessment. If approved, an approved VA provider like Assisting Hands – Boston Northwest delivers the care.

Aid and Attendance Program

We help veterans obtain the pension benefit they have earned through the VA Aid and Attendance program, from the first question to the final form.

Roughly 12 to 15 hours of in-home support each week.

Who is eligible?

  • Veterans, spouses of veterans, or surviving spouses who are 65 or older.
  • The veteran must have served on active duty during a period of war.
  • Meet specific asset and income criteria, and need regular help with daily living to remain at home.

What the benefit can pay for

  • Help with showers, dressing, and mobility
  • Keeping the home clean: vacuuming, laundry, dishes
  • Preparing healthy meals
