Mercer County is the capital county, as the Statehouse is located in Trenton. Mercer County, on the western side of New Jersey, is named in honor of General Hugh Mercer, a distinguished hero of the Revolution, who died from wounds inflicted during the Battle of Princeton in 1777. Officially founded in 1838 and carved out of other surrounding counties, Mercer County has a historical impact that reaches back to the pivotal battles of the American Revolutionary War.

Princeton University, Rider University, Thomas Edison State University, Westminster Choir College and the Princeton Theological Seminary all call Mercer County home. Famous Mercer County residents include Albert Einstein, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and Jon Stewart.

The county has an estimated population of 367,430. About 16% of these individuals are over the age of 65.

Monmouth County is the northernmost county along the Jersey Shore on the eastern side of New Jersey. An English navigator, Henry Hudson, and his crew aboard the Dutch vessel Half Moon, in 1609, spotted land in what is now Monmouth County, most likely off Sandy Hook; however, some historical accounts credit this landing to present-day Keansburg. Monmouth County was established on March 7, 1683, while part of the province of East Jersey.  The county was also host to a pivotal battle in the American Revolution. On June 28, 1778, Battle of Monmouth, near Freehold Township, General George Washington’s soldiers battled the British under Sir Henry Clinton, in the longest land battle of the war.

Bruce Springsteen got his start in Freehold and in the bars along Asbury Park and surrounding towns. Danny DeVito, Kevin Smith and Jack Nicholson also called Monmouth County home. Ocean County was carved out of Monmouth County in 1850, the second-largest in New Jersey by area. It is well-known for its shore areas, barrier islands and resort towns. Ocean County entered the “nuclear age” when the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in Forked River on December 1, 1969. The facility was closed after almost 50 years of service in September 2018. The county also hosts the Pine Barrens, one of the largest protected areas on the East Coast.

The county rose to fame with the popularity of the television show “Jersey Shore” which was taped in Seaside Heights. Baseball player Todd Frazier, Joe Pesci and Robin Quivers all call Ocean County home.

The county has an estimated population of 601,501. About 22% of these individuals are over the age of 65.
