Fall prevention is identifying and removing the causes of falls!

May 15, 2023Wolfgang Willems

Falls among the elderly are complicated and impacted by a variety of circumstances. An elderly person can fall both inside and outside due to sight impairment, a lack of physical power, or bad weather circumstances. It is perilous for them since a fall can cause serious injuries or even death owing to weaker bones.

As a result, fall prevention in geriatric care is critical. It is hard to remove all causes of falls, but it is feasible to offer a safer environment for the elderly. First, remove any unneeded things from the apartment’s floor, as well as rugs that curl and skid. Additionally, make sure there is enough lighting and that there are no thresholds between rooms.

Outside the residence, make sure the senior wears glasses with a filter to boost visual contrast and minimize glare. Low-floor buses and trams are also recommended. Similarly, convincing a senior to utilize a walker or cane is essential. It is the ideal inside and outdoor mobility assistance.

Exercise and mobility are another method of preventing falls in the elderly. They have an effect on the entire body, increasing the health and function of muscles, bones, joints, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, creating proper gait patterns, and assisting in maintaining proper posture when standing and moving.

Identifying and reducing fall causes

Physical problems such as decreased balance and movement, sight and hearing impairment, and cognitive decline can all contribute to falls. Moreover, environmental variables such as inadequate illumination, barriers, and slick surfaces might enhance the chance of a fall.

To avoid falls, it is critical to address and remove these variables. Frequent vision and hearing screenings can aid in the detection and correction of any deficiencies. Regular exercise, particularly balance and strength training, can also assist improve mobility and lower the risk of falling.

Making a secure environment

Fall prevention requires the creation of a safe environment. Other from removing barriers and enhancing illumination, it is critical to ensure that furniture is solid and safe, and that grab bars are put in restrooms and other locations where assistance is required.

It is also critical to wear suitable footwear that provides enough support and traction. Slips and falls can be exacerbated by wearing socks or slippers with no treads.

Conclusion

Fall prevention is critical for the elder’s safety and well-being. We can lower the risk of falls and enhance the quality of life for seniors by identifying and removing causes of falls, establishing a safe environment, and encouraging regular exercise and mobility.
