Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are increasingly prevalent conditions that are impacting the lives of many seniors in the U.S. These diseases can be especially devastating, as they progress slowly and cause cognitive abilities to decline gradually over time. As this occurs, seniors may require increasing amounts of care as their affliction worsens. Fortunately, resources such as support groups, clinical trials, and various treatment options exist to help those affected by these degenerative conditions manage their symptoms. In doing so, those affected by dementia can continue to lead an improved quality of life while making positive contributions within the community.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Alzheimer's Care Plano TexasAlzheimer’s disease and dementia are often spoken of as one in the same, but understanding their difference is paramount. Dementia is an overarching phrase which describes multiple conditions that lead to a decline in mental capacity; 60-80% of those classified with this illness have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s specifically. Whichever form it takes, sufferers will experience varying effects on cognitive abilities beginning most gently with symptoms like recurring memory gaps, then progressing into more severe changes like decreased awareness or response to people/places around them.

Paying attention to the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia can be crucial in helping your loved ones on their road to recovery. With timely detection, seniors affected by these conditions are more likely to maintain a high quality of life. Common early symptoms include:

  • Forgetfulness: With age, it can be hard to differentiate between normal lapses in memory and those associated with dementia. However, if your loved one experiences frequent episodes of forgetting details that should have been remembered easily—such as dates, people’s names, or events—this could likely indicate the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
  • Wandering: Wandering is a common occurrence among those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, due to the confusion caused by their condition. These individuals may be searching for something or someone in an attempt to make sense of where they are.
  • Agitation: People with mental health issues can feel their abilities slipping away, leaving them feeling helpless and angry. This can lead to sudden explosions of rage.
  • Incontinence: In the later stages of Alzheimer’s and dementia, individuals may experience a degradation in physical control that results in problems with incontinence.

Our specialized dementia caregivers are well-versed in addressing the common challenges associated with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We will keep your loved one safe by intercepting any wandering behaviors, as well as employ positive reinforcement techniques to help manage agitation or mood swings that may arise.

Wolfgang Willems, the owner, and his team at Assisting Hands serving Frisco and Plano are top notch! We have been using them since July 2022 to help care for our mother who experienced life-changing illness in June. Coping with hospitals, insurance companies and rehab facilities has been so emotionally and physically draining on our family and we felt we were caught in a downward, never-ending spiral. Then someone told us about Assisting Hands. We did some research on them and other similar caregivers and finally decided on Assisting Hands. I cannot stress enough how wonderful they have been and how much they have helped our family. They have allowed us to share the burden of care and given us time to focus on the more important aspects of multiple therapies and recovery.

Assisting Hands Frisco is doing a phenomenal job by caring for my mother. It all started with both an easy but diligent intake done by Henny, their care manager. Already the next day after the intake, we had the first caregiver coming to my mother's home. Henny calls my mother and me every week just to keep everyone in the loop. The caregivers are on time and care for my mother as if she were a family member.

Our experience with Assisting Hands of Frisco has truly been outstanding. From our initial conversation, their team made us feel supported, informed, and confident that we were in good hands. The intake with Henny was smooth, thorough, and reassuring, and we were amazed that a caregiver was available to start helping almost immediately. The care plan they developed was detailed, thoughtful, and clearly tailored to our family’s needs.

Henny has been incredible throughout this process — compassionate, attentive, and always proactive in checking in and keeping communication flowing. Megan and the rest of the office staff are just as impressive. They stay organized, follow up promptly, and consistently make sure every detail is handled. That level of coordination and reliability has brought our family so much peace of mind.

The caregivers themselves are dependable, skilled, and genuinely kind. They arrive on time, are well prepared, and treat our loved ones with patience, dignity, and sincere care. We especially appreciate the consistency of caregivers, which has made a meaningful difference for a family member who benefits from familiar faces. Any time we’ve needed changes or assistance, the team responds quickly and professionally.

Wolfgang, the owner, clearly leads by example. His dedication to quality care shows in every interaction we’ve had with the company. The team even walked us through the long-term care insurance process, helping us understand and secure benefits we wouldn’t have known how to pursue on our own.

During what has been a very challenging season for our family, Assisting Hands has provided not only dependable care but also reassurance and relief. Their services are fairly priced, their staff is exceptional, and their commitment to families is obvious.

If you need trustworthy, compassionate home care in the Frisco area, I highly recommend Assisting Hands. They’ve made a meaningful difference for us and have truly become part of our support system.
