VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefit
The Aid and Attendance benefit from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) offers about $2,200 per month. This may mean that they can get part-time care. However, the senior may not even know of these benefits.
Challenges to Getting VA Benefits
The reason why most seniors who may be eligible are not receiving these benefits is because they may not know they can cover some of expenses for home care. It is also difficult to apply for these benefits through Veterans Service Organization (VSO). It may take a long time and many trips to apply for and receive the benefits.
Assisting Hands Home Care works with the Care Planning Institute (CPI) who works with veterans and their surviving spouses to get their VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefit. The CPI agents are trained to help veterans successfully apply for and receive VA benefits.
Requirements for VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefits
To get VA pension and Aid and Attendance benefits, the eligible senior veterans and their spouses must meet the following criteria met:
- The veteran had to have served during a war
- The spouse must be widowed, and their spouse had to have been a wartime veteran
- Had to have served 90 days of active duty and at least a day during wartime
- Had to have been honorably discharged from the armed forces
- The veteran must be at least 65 years old
- The veteran or their eligible living spouse must need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to qualify
- The eligible veteran must have $123,600 or less in assets
- The veteran must have an income of less than $3,000 for a couple, $2,600 for a single veteran, and $2,000 for a surviving spouse
If the senior veteran is eligible to receive benefits, the VA will audit them to ensure they qualify for the benefits. This generally requires them to fill out lots of documentation. This is where CPI agents step in and can help those who qualify to keep their benefits going by applying for the paperwork needed over time.
VA Home Health Care and Respite Care
If you are a veteran who is eligible for a VA Pension with Aid and Attendance Benefits, these are the VA home care programs you may qualify for:
1. VA Home Health Aide (HHA)/ Home Health Program
The VA Home Health Aide program allows veterans to receive the care they need in their own home. The seniors do have to meet this criteria to qualify:
- An assessment for geriatric extended care (GEC)
- A significant cognitive impairment and a dependency for 3 or more cognitive impairments.
2. VA Respite Care Program
For veterans who need temporary care in their homes, they can use their VA pension benefits toward a VA respite care program and they do have to also go through the interdisciplinary assessment and have a dependency with 3 or more ADLs or cognitive impairment that is significant to qualify for these benefits.
