After Surgery Care | Post-Operative Care at Home

Free Consultation: (214) 609-1340

Your senior loved one may be discharged from a hospital or rehabilitation facility before they are ready to manage everything on their own at home. After surgery, even simple tasks such as getting dressed, taking a shower, preparing a meal, walking around the house, or getting to the bathroom can become difficult.

In many cases, a family member steps in to provide care, but they may not be available throughout the day or may not know how to handle all of the day-to-day needs that come with recovery. Having a caregiver at home can give your loved one the help they need with personal care and daily activities while they focus on recovering.

Assisting Hands Home Care provides post-surgery care in Frisco, TX, for seniors and adults returning home after surgery, a hospital stay, or rehabilitation. Our caregivers can assist with personal care, meals, mobility, light housekeeping, errands, transportation, medication reminders, and companionship based on each client’s needs.

Reach out to Assisting Hands Home Care at (214) 609-1340 for all your after-surgery care needs in Frisco, Texas.

What Is Post-Surgery Care at Home?

Post-Operative Care Frisco, TexasPost-surgery care at home is non-medical support for someone who needs help with everyday activities while recovering from a surgical procedure.

A person may be able to go home from the hospital but still need another person nearby to help with daily routines. This is especially common among older adults, people who live alone, and anyone who has temporary limitations with walking, bathing, dressing, cooking, or other activities.

A caregiver can provide practical assistance while the client follows the recovery instructions provided by their physician or other healthcare professionals.

Post-surgery home care can be short term. Some people need help for only a few days, while others need support for several weeks as they regain strength and return to their normal routine.

Who May Need Post-Surgery Home Care?

Post-surgery care can be helpful for an older adult who is returning home after a procedure and cannot safely manage all daily activities independently.

It may also be appropriate for an adult who has family nearby but whose spouse, children, or other relatives cannot be available throughout the day.

Post-surgery home care may be worth considering when someone:

  • Has difficulty walking or getting around the house
  • Needs help getting in and out of bed or a chair
  • Needs assistance with bathing or dressing
  • Has difficulty preparing meals
  • Needs reminders to take medications as directed
  • Has trouble keeping up with laundry or light household tasks
  • Needs transportation or assistance getting to follow-up appointments
    Lives alone
  • Has a spouse who is also older or has their own care needs
  • Has family members who work during the day
  • Needs someone nearby during the first days at home
  • Is returning home after a hospital or rehabilitation stay

The need for help can also change during recovery. Someone may need more assistance immediately after coming home and gradually require fewer hours as their mobility and independence improve.

What Types of Surgery May Require Help at Home?

Post-surgery home care may be useful after procedures such as:

Joint Replacement Surgery

Hip and knee replacement patients may have temporary difficulty walking, bathing, dressing, preparing meals, and moving around the home.

A caregiver can help with everyday activities while the client follows the mobility and rehabilitation instructions provided by their medical team.

Back and Spine Surgery

After back or spine surgery, bending, lifting, standing, and moving around the home may be difficult.

A caregiver can assist with personal care, meals, light housekeeping, errands, and other daily activities that become harder during recovery.

Abdominal Surgery

Procedures involving the abdomen can temporarily affect a person’s mobility and ability to complete normal household tasks.

Having help with meals, bathing, dressing, laundry, and other daily activities can make the transition home easier.

Cardiac Procedures and Heart Surgery

Some people need additional support at home after heart surgery or other cardiac procedures. Fatigue and temporary limitations can make everyday activities more difficult.

A caregiver can provide non-medical assistance with daily routines while the client follows the recovery plan provided by their healthcare team.

Cancer Surgery

Recovery after cancer-related surgery can involve fatigue, reduced strength, changes in appetite, and difficulty completing normal activities.

Home care can provide practical support with meals, personal care, transportation, errands, and household tasks.

Shoulder and Other Orthopedic Surgery

An arm or shoulder that is temporarily immobilized can make simple activities such as dressing, bathing, preparing food, and household chores much harder.

A caregiver can help with these daily tasks while the person follows their doctor’s restrictions.

Cataract and Other Eye Procedures

Even relatively routine procedures can temporarily affect someone’s ability to drive, manage errands, or complete certain daily activities.

Older adults may benefit from having someone available to assist with meals, transportation, household tasks, and personal care while they recover.

Other Surgical Procedures

Post-surgery home care is not limited to one type of procedure. If someone needs temporary help with daily activities after surgery, an in-home caregiver may be able to provide support.

The caregiver’s role is non-medical and does not replace the surgeon, physician, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or other licensed healthcare professional.

Post-Hospital Care in Frisco

The transition from a hospital or rehabilitation facility back home can be challenging.

Frisco residents may receive treatment at facilities such as Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Frisco, Medical City Frisco, Texas Health Hospital Frisco, and Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Prosper. These facilities provide different types of medical and rehabilitation care, and some patients return home after their treatment while others may need additional rehabilitation or skilled services.

Assisting Hands can provide non-medical assistance once a client is home.

That may include help getting settled, preparing meals, assisting with personal care, helping with household tasks, providing transportation for appropriate errands or appointments, and offering companionship during recovery.

For patients coming home after outpatient procedures, support may also be useful during the first day or several days after surgery. Medical City Surgery Center Frisco, for example, provides same-day surgical procedures where patients recover at home rather than staying overnight.

How Frisco Caregivers Can Help After Surgery

  • Pick them up at the facility and transport them home
  • Clearly communicate the discharge instructions to the senior and their family
  • Set-up an appointment with their doctor for any labs or tests that may be needed
  • Coordinate delivery of any needed durable medical equipment (DME)
  • Making sure the new prescriptions and discharge orders are sent to their physician
  • Setting up their Mediset and reminding them to pick up medications at the pharmacy
  • Cleaning their fridge and buying groceries
  • Helping them with light housekeeping, errands, and laundry duties
  • Meal prep while making sure to meet their dietary restrictions
  • Making sure their home is safe for you before you get there
  • Providing them with help with dressing, bathing etc.

Overnight Post-Surgery Care

After Surgery Care Frisco Texas Some people are comfortable during the day but need additional help at night.

After surgery, getting out of bed, using the bathroom, changing position, or getting settled for the night may be difficult.

Overnight caregivers can assist with nighttime routines, including getting ready for bed, restroom assistance, repositioning, and other non-medical needs.

Overnight care may be particularly helpful for someone who is recovering from surgery and should not be getting up or moving around the house alone.

Wolfgang Willems, the owner, and his team at Assisting Hands serving Frisco and Plano are top notch! We have been using them since July 2022 to help care for our mother who experienced life-changing illness in June. Coping with hospitals, insurance companies and rehab facilities has been so emotionally and physically draining on our family and we felt we were caught in a downward, never-ending spiral. Then someone told us about Assisting Hands. We did some research on them and other similar caregivers and finally decided on Assisting Hands. I cannot stress enough how wonderful they have been and how much they have helped our family. They have allowed us to share the burden of care and given us time to focus on the more important aspects of multiple therapies and recovery.

Assisting Hands Frisco is doing a phenomenal job by caring for my mother. It all started with both an easy but diligent intake done by Henny, their care manager. Already the next day after the intake, we had the first caregiver coming to my mother's home. Henny calls my mother and me every week just to keep everyone in the loop. The caregivers are on time and care for my mother as if she were a family member.

Our experience with Assisting Hands of Frisco has truly been outstanding. From our initial conversation, their team made us feel supported, informed, and confident that we were in good hands. The intake with Henny was smooth, thorough, and reassuring, and we were amazed that a caregiver was available to start helping almost immediately. The care plan they developed was detailed, thoughtful, and clearly tailored to our family’s needs.

Henny has been incredible throughout this process — compassionate, attentive, and always proactive in checking in and keeping communication flowing. Megan and the rest of the office staff are just as impressive. They stay organized, follow up promptly, and consistently make sure every detail is handled. That level of coordination and reliability has brought our family so much peace of mind.

The caregivers themselves are dependable, skilled, and genuinely kind. They arrive on time, are well prepared, and treat our loved ones with patience, dignity, and sincere care. We especially appreciate the consistency of caregivers, which has made a meaningful difference for a family member who benefits from familiar faces. Any time we’ve needed changes or assistance, the team responds quickly and professionally.

Wolfgang, the owner, clearly leads by example. His dedication to quality care shows in every interaction we’ve had with the company. The team even walked us through the long-term care insurance process, helping us understand and secure benefits we wouldn’t have known how to pursue on our own.

During what has been a very challenging season for our family, Assisting Hands has provided not only dependable care but also reassurance and relief. Their services are fairly priced, their staff is exceptional, and their commitment to families is obvious.

If you need trustworthy, compassionate home care in the Frisco area, I highly recommend Assisting Hands. They’ve made a meaningful difference for us and have truly become part of our support system.
