Fathers are honored on Father’s Day. Each June, adult children spend quality time with their elderly dads, just as they had in their childhood. But since dad has gotten older, the activities they once enjoyed on this special occasion should be tweaked to be senior friendly.
Dads are not usually a well of emotions, but they certainly appreciate being recognized for playing a major role in their children’s lives. Adult children rarely hesitate to show gratitude for a father’s support, encouragement, acceptance, and life lessons. The following are ways to reciprocate love.
1.Take Him to a Baseball Game
Some dads have always been their children’s number one fan. They likely cheered them on at school baseball games. Return the favor on Father’s Day by buying tickets to a major league baseball game; or head to the closest minor league park for an afternoon of fun.
2.Throw Out a Line
An unhurried day at the lake with a fishing line is an ideal way to spend Father’s Day with the man who means the most. State parks boast excellent fishing spots. Park rangers are resourceful for determining the best fishing gear, bait, and which fish are biting.
In Palm Beach County we are blessed with a plethora of options for fishing, both saltwater and freshwater. You don’t have to rent a boat for saltwater fishing as you can fish from the shore or from a pier or you can fish in one of our many freshwater lakes or in the intracoastal. Anywhere in the county you are within minutes of the best fishing anywhere. For more information, please visit https://discover.pbcgov.org/parks/Amenities/Fishing.aspx
3. Fly a Kite
Spending quality time with Dad doesn’t require more than a kite and a strong breeze. Double the amount of time spent with Dad by assembling a kite together. Dad doesn’t even have to travel far, since a big backyard is a great place to fly a kite.
4. Birdwatch
Dad may be an avid birdwatcher. If so, grab the binoculars and head out to the local park or the backyard for a fun day of birdwatching. Try to identify these fine-feathered friends and stimulate Dad’s mind. If he’s got a knack for woodworking, build a birdhouse together!
Birdwatching is always a pleasure in Palm Beach County! Go to your neighborhood park and you will always be rewarded with a variety of birds. Or head to more out of the way places such as John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, John Prince Park, Okeeheelee Park and Nature Center and be truly wowed.

5. Fire Up the Grill
Even seniors feel the thrill of firing up the backyard grill. Invite friends and family to a barbecue on Dad’s special day. Racks of ribs and beef burgers will sizzle on the grill and wet Dad’s tastebuds. His afternoon will be more memorable in the company of his favorite people.
6. Bike Ride
Picturesque, winding roads are the perfect place to take a bike ride with Dad on Father’s Day. He’ll get the exercise he needs while enjoying the companionship of his adult children. The fresh air and social engagement will do wonders for his physical and emotional health. Just make sure to exercise when it is cooler early or late in the day and keep hydrated!
There are many options for biking in Palm Beach County, we have many city and county parks as well as a couple of state parks. For more ideas, please visit: https://www.traillink.com/city/palm-beach-fl-trails/
7. Play Cards
Dad may prefer a day in, sitting at a table with his adult children and playing cards. Make a day of his cherished pastime by bringing in cold beverages and delicious snacks. Invite his buddies over for an old-fashioned game of poker. Cigars are optional!
8. Golf
If Dad is no longer able to swing the driver due to age-related weakness or arthritis, he can still play golf on Father’s Day. Pick a miniature course for a fun, fast game. He’ll relish the friendly competition with his adult children, while getting in a dose of exercise.
In Palm Beach we are lucky enough to have one of the highest concentrations of golf courses per capita in the US. There are also a variety of entertaining mini-golf courses.
9. Visit a Museum
If Dad is into art and history, buy tickets to a museum. A walk around the air-conditioned museum on a sweltering day in June is a welcome event. He’ll see historic relics and paintings that inspire him. Online exhibits replace going to a museum if Dad is homebound.
The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach and the Boca Raton Museum of Art in Boca Raton are world- class organizations with prestigious collections and exhibitions. At the Flagler Museum, in Palm Beach you will step inside Henry Flagler’s Gilded-Age mansion and enjoy historic exhibits and well as artwork and furnishings from that era.
10. Tour a Brewery
Sipping a pint or two may be on Dad’s agenda this Father’s Day. Schedule a tour and tasting at the local brewery. The tour of the brewery can be eye-opening, as he learns new information about his go-to beverage. This fun outing is one he won’t want to miss.
11. Hunt for Treasures
Grab metal detectors and head out to the beach or field for a day of treasure hunting. Comb the land for precious metals that are just waiting to be unearthed. The leisurely walk through the open areas is not only a bonding experience but a low-impact form of exercise.
12. Teach Him Technology
Dad may have once known it all, but in today’s world of technological advancement, he may feel a little behind. Teach Dad how to use a particular device, such as a smartphone or a tablet, so that he can stay connected with his loved ones throughout the year.
13. Watch Classic Films
Aging can lead to limited mobility, making renting films for movie night a perfect way to spend Father’s Day. Dad will root for the heroes, whether that’s John Wayne or Clark Gable, and feel gladdened to spend time with his adult children—who may be movie buffs like him.
14. Delve into His Youth
If Dad is a storyteller, he’ll feel a sense of pride in recapturing the bravado of his youth. Ask Dad to retell stories about his first car or how he spent Father’s Day as a kid. Consider recording the conversations to share with later generations.
