Elderly Care in West Palm Beach FLKnowing what the symptoms of a stroke and heart attack will make it much easier to determine if your loved one has one of these diseases. According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. The symptoms of both a stroke and heart attack can occur days or even weeks before these conditions become serious.

If your loved one lives alone, you may want to consider hiring an elderly care provider to provide companionship and care for the elder, while also watching for any of the following symptoms.

Symptoms of a Stroke

Signs of a possible stroke include:

  • Suddenly becoming confused
  • Having trouble talking or trouble understanding what is being said
  • Becoming numb in the face, arm or leg, which usually occurs on one side of the body
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes; double vision
  • Becoming dizzy, losing balance, or having trouble walking
  • Severe headache for no known reason

Symptoms of a Heart Attack

Some common symptoms of a heart attack are:

  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lightheadedness
  • Breaking out in a cold sweat
  • Pain in the chest. This may include feelings of fullness, uncomfortable pressure, pain in the left side of the chest, or squeezing

Heart attacks are more common in women and may have different symptoms than those listed above, which includes:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Discomfort in your stomach, which may mirror the feeling of indigestion
  • Discomfort in the neck, upper back, or shoulder
  • Vomiting or nausea

Another symptom of a heart attack is angina, which could cause the following feelings:

  • Squeezing, fullness, pain, or pressure in the chest
  • Pain or discomfort in the shoulder, back, arm, neck, or jaw
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating, dizziness
  • Dizziness

The sooner the elder is able to get treated for their symptoms, the better their chance of survival. Watch for any of these symptoms and call 911 the moment your loved one complains of them. Heart attacks and strokes can be extremely fatal, especially if the symptoms are ignored or assumed to be those of less serious health problems. Encourage your loved one to get the medical attention they need as soon as possible.

In order to make sure your loved one has someone with them when they have a medical emergency, hire an elder care provider. This person not only cares about their well-being in the same way you do, but they also can help the elder with everyday tasks.
