What Should You Do if There’s a Fire in Your Elderly Loved One’s Home?

Caregivers in Boynton Beach FL

Caregivers in Boynton Beach FLOne of the worst things that you can discover as a family caregiver is that your elderly loved one’s home is on fire. Being prepared for a fire can help you and your elderly loved one to stay calm if this happens to you.

Follow Your Fire Emergency Plan

Your loved one’s home needs to have a fire emergency plan if it doesn’t already. A fire emergency plan is basically a plan of attack in case there is a fire. Your loved one needs to know how she can exit the house, where to go, and what to do. Some local fire departments will help you to formulate a fire safety plan if you call and make an appointment. Once you have a plan, you’ll need to practice it so that you and your loved one know the plan by heart.

Call 911 as Soon as Possible

Once you’re away from the house, it’s time to call 911. You might be tempted to call 911 first, but that can cost you precious time that you and your elderly loved one need to get her out of the house safely. Get to your designated safe spot, whether that’s in the yard or a neighbor’s house, and then call for help.

Don’t Try to Fight the Fire

Another mistake you might be tempted to make is to try to fight the fire yourself. Some smaller fires, such as cooking fires, may be something you can handle on your own. But in general, the same logic from above applies here. The more time that you spend fighting the fire, that’s less time that you have to get your elderly loved one out of the house and to a safe location.

Make Sure Your Loved One Is Safe

Ultimately, your most important goal in the event of a fire is to make sure that your elderly loved one is safe. Once you’ve gotten her safely out of the house, you can go about solving other problems that the fire presents.

The most important aspect of dealing with a fire is making sure that your elderly loved one and anyone else in the house are able to get out safely. Everything else can be dealt with afterward.
